Intuition, Distance and Creation of Aesthetics--Benedetto Croce and the Early Aesthetic Thought of Zhu Guangqian

The establishment and development of Zhu Guangqian’s early aesthetic thought is very closely related with the ideas of Benedetto Croce, the famous Italian aesthetician. In fact, Zhu’s aesthetic theory centered “intuition of images” is directly born out of Croce’s related viewpoint. Zhu’s early aesthetic thoughts like “the independence of art” and “art for art’s sake” arouse sympathy with that of Croce’s, and just because of this, the two aestheticians go their own ways on “how to realize the independence of art”.
