Transformations in English idioms indicate not only the creative application of English idioms on the part of language-users,but also reflect their cognitive way of thinking.Human beings' conceptions take shape from their experiences obtained in the process of knowing and sensing the world and are embodied in the language structure in a peculiar pattern.Human beings,with their inborn cognitive ability,project their own experiences and social experiences in abstract conceptual structure.Transformations in English idioms are the result of cognitive process working on thinking and conceptualizing.By probing into the phenomenon of transformations in English idioms with the help of frame theory and prototype and category theories of cognitive linguistics,we can fully recognize the cognitive nature of transformations in English idioms.
