A Study of the Difference in Translation under the Influence of Deconstruction: A Perspective of Feminism

This paper studies the issue of difference in translation under the influence of deconstruction, as shown in the French-Canadian feminist texts by Nicole Brossard and their feminist translations into English. Feminist translators explicitly reject traditional views on fidelity and emphasize the individualistic and creative nature of translation. Thus, their work is seen as a challenge to mainstream translation discourse. The argument on which feminist translation rests is that through the use of innovative translation strategies a feminist translation becomes a deliberate mistranslation and extension of the source text, and that feminist translation, unlike conventional translation, constitutes difference and not derivation. This argument is questionable. We need to examine how feminist translation differs from conventional translation. In the texts analyzed the feminist translation discourse is not embodied in actual translation practice and that the unusual translation techniques used constitute a minor feature of the translations.
