Exploring the Dialect Intonation in the Proficiency Test of Putonghua

The tone of a Chinese character and intonation in the proficiency test in Putonghua are important elements of the pronunciation of the examinee. Both the intonation and the tone of a Chinese character exist in sentences and they overlap with each other. The vestige of the tone of a Chinese character in dialect forms a dialect intonation different form the standard pronunciation of Putonghua. This article, based on the expounding of the relation between the tone and intonation, reveals the connotation and characteristic of the intonation of the dialect, and from the viewpoint of the causes of the formation of the dialect intonation, this article also puts forward the ways to overcome the dialect intonation.
