Shanghai as the Symbolic Image

Shanghai has an important significance in Wang Anyi's literary works. It is not only a background of the author's writings,but also has some symbolic meanings. It essentially equals a figure who has individual character and displays different characteristic in different cases. Through analyzing the personal and symbolic features in Wang Anyi's writings, this paper has analyzed Sanghai's three symbolic meanings: the city of ambitions and the city of grief, the body of mother and the home of spirit, the sea of bitterness and the dream of wealth.
