Pragmatic Interpretation and Translation of Puns

Pun is one of the most common rhetorical devices used in Chinese and foreign literary works. The interpretation and translation of puns are a difficulty in the understanding of literary works. The cognitive and relevance principles of pragmatics are adopted in this paper to explore the mechanism of understanding puns. Moreover, a triadic translation strategy is proposed from the pragmatic perspective. It is concluded that the translation of puns is a complicated process that involves double inferences. It is a process of estimation made by the translator in accordance with his understanding of the source language (SL) and the expectation of readers in the target language (TL).
