Abstract:As a representative of landscape and pastoral poetry in the Glorious Age of Tang Dynasty, Wang Wei was renowned for his sensuous depiction of hills and waters and pastoral scenery, in which "feeling and setting are harnoniously blended, and painting resides in poetical lines". Matuwo Baseu, worshiped as a saint Haiku poet in Japan, was the founder of Shofu Haikai, a monument in the poetic history of Japan. Though living in different times, different nations, and different nationalities, Wang and Matuwo Baseu share a lot of similarities in aesthetic taste and style, owint to the similar world outlook and aesthetic thinking they formed from the influence of Zen Buddhism and Taoism. The only difference is that Wang Wei impresses us with his pastoral merrymaking, while Matuwo Baseu strikes us with his humble bitterness. In spite of this, they formed quite similar artistic spirit in their persistent pursuit for artistic perfection.
