Different Concepts of Space in To the Lighthouse

To the Lighthouse is one of the representative works of Virginia Woolf. Although the novel depicted space in different concepts and told a simple story of a common family, it implied a profound philosophical truth. Through the different concepts of space, covering it between rational knowledge and the essence of the world, it between different characters in regard to epistemology and methodology and it between characters and the lighthouse, Woolf expressed the importance of rationalism and in the meantime illustrated the limitations if realizing the world merely by rationalism. Thus, the novel showed that only if we combine our rational knowledge with perceptive knowledge through practice can we get truths and see the essence of the world.
