J.Habermas' and J.Ratzinger's Views on the Possibility and Necessity of Dialogue between Rationality and Religion

Jürgen Habermas and Joseph Ratzinger initiated a debate on the relationship between rationality and religion in München on January 19, 2004. Although both of them sought for a dialogue and cooperation between rationality and religion in the practical dimension, their theoretical positions opposed each other. According to Habermas, the possibility of this dialogue and cooperation rests on the communicative rationality that can assimilate positive elements in religion, whereas Ratzinger holds that rationality and religion should be restricted and purified by each other.
