在语言民族主义的理论视野中,语言与现代民族国家的生成之间具有密切的关联,语言被视作民族这一"想象的共同体"的一种重要的建构性力量.在这种语境下,中日近代语言变革的诸多相似之处得到了凸显.然而值得注意的是,虽然日本的言文一致运动和晚清的白话文运动皆以"推动教育进步"为指归,均标举起了‘‘言文一致'的旗帜,但在这表象之下二者间却存在深刻而又微妙的差异,这种差异彰显了语言民族主义的两种截然不同的发展向度.对其问的差异进行深入分析、探察,将有助于厘清"民族"一义的多重蕴涵以及语言在现代民族国家生成过程当中所扮演的多种"角色".
