Hai Tian Shi Hua and the Beginning of Chinese Comparative Poetics

Hai Tian Shi Hua,a book of poetic criticisms by Hu Huaichen of the early 20th century,approaches western poetry and traditional Chinese poetry in a dialogue mode and thus started comparative poetics in China. Applying traditional Chinese critical method and western literary concepts and perspectives,the book realizes,for the first time in Chinese history,the integration of Chinese and western aesthetics in poetry criticism.For all its defects,the book is an invaluable document in the understanding of modern Chinese literary theory and criticism.
