西奥多·德莱塞的第一部长篇小说《嘉莉妹妹》开辟了美国城市小说的新纪元。当时的美国社会是一个工业化和城市化迅猛发展的转型社会，传统的农业社会在城市文明的召唤下迅速解体，充满梦想与希望的大批的人们抱着改变命运的幻想涌入像芝加哥和纽约这样的大城市，形成了一种特殊的劳动风景线。德莱塞用独特的视角描写城市生活，分析男女主人公的命运来突出、渲染小说的主题思想。本篇论文从城市空间、家庭观念和城市对人的影响等三个方面分析德莱塞的此作品对美国城市文学的开创意义。

The Hypocrisy and Indifference behind the Prosperity——On the Pioneering Significance of Sister Carrie by Theodore Dreiser in the American City Literature

The first novel of Theodore Dreiser, Sister Carrie, opened a new field in the American city novels. The contemporary American society was a transformational society in which industrialization and the urbanization had gained swift and violent development. The traditional agricultural society summoned the rapid disintegration in the city civilization. Large quantities of people filled with hopes and fantasies for changing their destiny poured into big cities such as Chicago and New York, which had formed a special work scenery. Dreiser described the city life from a unique angle of view and analyzed the hero＇s and the heroine＇s destiny to highlight the theme of the novel. This paper tries to analyze the pioneering significance of this novel in the American city literature from the following three aspects such as city space, family attachment and the influence of cities on citizens.
