| Abstract: | The Chinese religion popular in the Chinese community in the Southeast Asia is a composite religion constituted by the elements of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism. It originated in the folk religion that was ubiquitous in the coastal area in China. The Chinese folk religion played a special role in the formation and development of the Chinese communities in Singapore and Malaya in the early days. As an important part of traditional Chinese culture, the folk religion took root in social life among the Chinese in Singapore and Malaya. Therefore the factors of the folk religion merit our attention in the study of the history of the Chinese communities in the Southeast Asia, especially in Singapore and Malaya. |
