Modernity, Historical Break and Cultural Transformation of the Chinese Society

Modernity is closely related to social changes in the process of modernization. As the process of modernization deepens, scholars begin to reflect on the issue of modernity. Generally, modernity is characterized by a historical break, which has three aspects: motivation, institutional framework, and ideology of daily life. The issue of modernity presents itself in China as the universalization of modernity takes place. Chinese conceptions of modernity are compatible with other conceptions. The May 4th Movement is justified against the background of historical break. The issue of modernity in China has its own concerns. It is argued that our discussion of modernity has already taken the right orientation by endeavoring to construct a new pattern of cultural transformation of the Chinese society on the basis of self-identification.
