Religious Interpretation of The Poorhouse Fair

Being the first novel in his literary career, The Poorhouse Fair , in spite of its immature writing technique, has laid foundation for Updike's religious theme in his future creation. This thesis is to demonstrate, through analyzing the clashes of two dimensions, that Updike intends to reveal the conflicts between religious belief and materialism and secularism in modern society. As a Christian, Updike could not help uttering his bitterness when witnessing the decline of traditional religion in modern world.
