| Abstract: | Pragmatic inference competence determines whether the utterance can be correctly understood and plays an important role in maintaining the conversation. This paper is a case study of the pragmatic inference competence of English of Chinese students who major in a University of science and engineering. The findings reveal some of the problems in foreign language teaching. At the end of the paper, some suggestions are advanced. |
