Critical Discourse Analysis of Political Speeches: A Reading of the Gettysburg Address by A. Lincoln

Based on the theory of critical discourse analysis in systemic functional linguistics, this paper approaches the Gettysburg Address by A. Lincoln from the perspectives of transitivity, modality and presupposition. To be concrete, many a language strategy is adopted by Lincoln in his speech, including the use of sentences showing people＇s material and mental process, first person ＂we＂ and other pronouns, modal verbs, and many ambiguous presuppositions to convey implicit messages.
