On the Pragmatic Functions of Speech Sounds

Language is made up of semiotic symbols, speech sounds and semantic meanings.People mainly depend on language for communication, in which the meanings of words are the major carrier of message but their pronunciations also play a complementary role. In a specific context, language-users can change the meanings of words by the change of their phonetic sounds. The focus of this paper is to inquire into the pragmatic functions of phonetic sounds and reveal their relationships with context, aesthetic effects and grammatical features.
