| Abstract: | The present paper analyses the rhetorical features of the word "board" used as a pun in Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens.It aims to define and illustrate how language is used as the noumenon of literary works and how literature is exhibited as the art of language.It also emphasizes the significance of our paying great attention to the study of the language features of the author in order to get thorough understanding of his literary works,to reveal its themes and to grasp its intrinsic spirits as well.The use of the word "board" as a pun in Oliver Twist best illustrates both the social themes of the works involved and the language charm of Charles Dickens as a great literary master. |
