<八月之光>展示给我们一个种族主义压抑人性的荒诞世界.主人公乔作为一个混血儿身处这样一个白人至上的世界里处处受挫,必然经历与他人隔离的荒诞感;他毕生所逃避和使他感到不安的是他体内潜在的黑人血统,而他向往的是白人的生活,这又体现出他被种族主义所异化的状况.直到死亡临近的时候,乔才意识到他一生所追求的无意义,于是他勇敢而镇静地面对了自己的死亡.存在哲学的重要概念诸如荒诞、异化、死亡在乔的一生中得到了具体的体现.

An Existential Interpretation of Light in August

In Light in August Faulkner presents us a world,in which racism plays a dominant role and oppresses human nature.The protagonist Joe Christmas as a mulatto always encounters frustration in such a white supremacy society,and he will inevitably experiences absurd sense of inner estrangement from others;what Joe attempts to escape and what makes him uneasy is his potential Negro identity,and what he aspires for is the life of the white,which indicates his situation of being alienated by racism.In the end,with the impending of death,Joe is awakened and realizes what he has been seeking all his life is worthless and unimportant,which leads to both his bravely welcoming death and his final peaceful death.Therefore,such important concepts of existentialism as absurdity,alienation and death are concretely represented in Joe.
