Cross - Cultural Comparison of Compliment - Response in English and Chinese

A compliment is a universal social linguistic phenomenon, which has its own expression ways in the English and Chinese culture respectively. This paper mainly probes into the influences of cultural differences upon the compliment-response interaction from communicating situations, objects, and patterns. It aims at eschewing pragmatic failures in the foreign communications for lack of cultural knowledge, thereby helping to communicate appropriately.
