A Sociolinguistic Perspective of Slang

As an extremely non-standard variety with a long history, slang is popular with different classes in society. Starting with the analysis of the definition of slang and the comparison between it and other similar varieties, this paper probes into the formation, function and value of slang from a sociolinguistic perspective. On the basis of analysis the paper draws a conclusion: in modern society slang is exerting more and more important communicative and social functions; it will never die but flourish.
