Lively Public Opinion about Constitution in Late Qing Private Newspapers——the Case of Shanghai Journal (Shen Bao)

The Shanghai Journal (Shen Bao) was a privately operated newspaper in the late Qing Dynasty and, as other privately operated publications, its opinion was not conservative and complacent, but carried objective comments on late Qing constitutionalism, which broadened the public view and obtained good public opinion effects. This paper discusses the appearance, the main contents, and characteristics of the public opinion in the Shanghai Journal to explore the activeness, characteristics, and causes of the public opinion of the time and provides reference for studies of the Late Qing ideology and culture.
