The Environmental Thought in Hou Ren-zhi's Historical Geography

Hou Ren-zhi, one of the most influential figures in the field of Chinese modern historical geography, made a great contribution for developing this young disciplinary in China. He is the first man who theoretically broke down the tradition of the Chinese dynastic geography (Yan Ge Di Li), and enlightened the new direction of the Chinese modern historical geography. His unique practices mainly focused on urban historical geography, and the field of the environmental changes in the desert area in Northwest China. In the practice, he always emphasizes the importance of field survey, and advocating the cooperation with archaeology, history, ecology, geomorphology, pollen analysis, and the remote sensing technology etc. His achievements spanned the fields of natural sciences and social sciences, in which embodied his environmental thought.
