Functions and Implications of Formulaic Language in Second Language Acquisition and Research

As studies show, the task facing language learners is not just that of acquiring a rule system but also of mastering a set of lexicalized sentence stems that will enable them to process language efficiently. The development of target like L2 ability, then, requires the memorization of a large set of formulaic chunks and patterns. The three different functions (as communication, production and learning strategies)of formulaic language are very important or even the center in language acquisition. The increasing studies posit many methodological and theoretical difficulties and challenge the strict boundaries between language knowledge and use.
