Tennessee Witliam＇s representative drama A Streetcar Named Desire, broke the mediocre situation of the American Drama Circle in the Post-World War II. The drama, the main thread of which is the tragic fate of the Old South lady, reveals sharply the contradictions between strong Industrial Civilization and the increasingly waning Old Southern Plantation Civilization and has become a poetic expression of mourning for an Old South that died in the first haif of the twentieth century. The female protagonist Blanche DuBois cannot adapt to the new environment, resisting reality in illusions. Meanwhile, in an attempt to alleviate and mask her inner fear of death, she lets loose her desires, leading to her degeneration. Her irrepressible sexual desires, fear of death and despair for love are the fundamental causes for her eventual tragic fate. Blanche＇s tragedy, which may result from the prosecution by feminine values of the Old Southern Civilization, is also a tragedy of the Fall of a Lost Civilization.
