Is Grotesque A Type of Beauty？：A General Review of Western Grotesque Studies

With the Modernist arts springing up since the 19th century,grotesque has been increasingly drawing the attention of aesthetic researchers.The grotesque studies in the Western world has become quite academically mature after development of nearly two centuries.Its forms of expression and its aesthetic significance being systematically explored,grotesque has grown up to a new focus of aesthetic studies.Comparatively,our domestic understanding about it is still far from enough,some researchers mistakening it for ugliness or absurdity,while others misunderstanding it for a new type of beauty.Therefore,a general review of the historical development of the Western grotesque studies will help to correct our misunderstanding and prejudice against grotesque.
