The Utilitarian Orientation of Literary Criticism in si ku quan shu zong mu

At the turn of the Ming Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty, the idealist philosophy of Song and Ming dynasties (a Confucian school) developed to such extreme that scholars in Qing dynasty began to advocate the traditional Confucian notion of utilitarianism as a way to save that particular Confucian school. As a result, utilitarianism became prevalent in the society. And so the literary criticism in si ku quan shu zong mu tended to be highly utilitarian.
