Effect of the Soviet Union upon US' China policy

The US' China policy is one part of US' global strategy. Before the breakup of the Soviet Union, the US would always take the Soviet Union into consideration when it adopted a certain China policy, due to the discrepancies in the ideology, interest and aim of the US and the Soviet Union. So the Soviet Union played an important role in the process of the US' decision of China policy. In different periods, different situations of the relations between China and Soviet Union, between China and the US, all affected the US' China policy making.
