CHINESE IMAGES IN THE THREE NOVELS BY JOHN HERSEY

In A Single Pebble, Hersey portrays a primitively harmonious Chinese environment between man and nature under the control of Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism. The American "I" manages to change it with the Western advanced science and technology, but ends up with failure. In White Lotus, Hersey makes the use of China setting dominated by Buddhist "Benevolence" to introspect and satire the racial discrimination and double standards for the morality in present America. In The Call, the American "I" plans to save China from poverty and ignorance , only to find that they are wasting time because Chinese civilization has been existing for over three thousand years. So far, Hersey aims to use Chinese images to help America out from its cultural crisis and spiritual crisis, to appeal for diversity cultures in the globalization.
