In Long Day＇s Journey into Night, O＇Neill successfully described the tragic family life of the Tyrones through each character＇ s monologues and the commonplace dialogues in their daily life. The high frequency of the Tyrone-Jamie-Edmund alliance inflicts a form of sadistic coercion on Mary in a three-versus-one configuration. Yet, Mary, being excluded from other family members, is also alienated from her housemaid, Cathleen. Thus, as the men of the family unburden themselves--each has a listening companion to lend a sympathetic ear, Mary, in contrast, is completely alienated, both from the men of the family and from her woman companion, and ends up as a lunatic.
