| Abstract: | Semantic motivation shows the internal relationship between a word and the object that is represented.This paper,on the basis of cognition,deals with metonymy of English proper names in the following aspects: 1) metonymy derived from English proper names with or without the first letter capitalized;2) the relationship between the subject and its reference;3) conversion of parts of speech while tracing back to the origin of the substitution in the new context. |
