English Ambiguity and Its Positive Functions

Ambiguity is a kind of linguistic phenomenon that a linguistic form can express two or more than two different meanings. It exists widely in almost all languages around the world. It is generally believed that ambiguity can be an obstacle to communication. But if ambiguity is used cleverly, it can perform useful functions and achieve some communication goal. This paper presents a tentative study of several types of ambiguity and their positive use in humors, advertisements and literature.
