In this paper we explore what we consider to be the shared concerns of those neurodivergent and/or mad-identified scholars and activists who are seeking to make space for themselves within the academy. In doing so, we consider what critical questions and action people involved in these could address together in ways that move beyond identity-based politics  相似文献

Mad Studies is emerging as a new force in ‘mental health’ discourse and developments. Given the way in which other would-be progressive developments associated with attempts to include experimental knowledge in this field, such as ‘recovery’ and ‘peer support’, have been subverted, this article considers whether it is possible for Mad Studies to avoid this. Drawing on developments in Disability Studies and in relation to the social model of disability, we explore what can be done in order to safeguard the distinctiveness of Mad Studies and foster its unique contribution.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This article examines how a web-based communication and information site was used as a forum to foster a sense of community among members of a graduate social work program in a multi-site, rural university setting. Results indicate that students made greater use of the site than faculty and those who used the site felt a greater sense of community. This article also explores the lessons learned in using this type of electronic discourse.  相似文献

This symposium engages with the work of claymation artist Nathalie Djurberg. Djurberg molds and animates plasticine figures with as much precision and skill as she masterfully puppeteers her viewer's affective responses through a blizzard of violence, cruelty, and self/other boundary intrusions. Briefly commenting on some of the questions she proposes we concern ourselves with in her piece It's the Mother, I introduce 4 short commentaries that examine it from the perspective of maternality and its discourses, womanhood and its institutional abuses, internal objects that constitute our worlds with and/or against our consent, and the implications for psychoanalytic practice when a treatment traffics in the relational currency of sadism and masochism.  相似文献

This article presents a social-psychological theory to explain collective behavior involving unusual somatic reactions. The authors term this social phenomenon a "collective anxiety attack," to distinguish it from the psychiatric label of "mass psychogenic illness." First, the article contrasts fundamental assumptions of a psychiatric-medical interpretation with a social-psychological interpretation. Next, the article illustrates the difference using a reinterpretation of and new data about the classic case of the "mad gasser of Mattoon." Then, the authors present a social-psychological theory which suggests that collective anxiety is induced by a shared belief in a threat rumor. Once a belief in an imminent threat spreads widely enough to create a consensual definition of the situation, the belief intensifies fear and distorts individual perception. Belief in the threat rumor creates psychological stress and expectancy effects that shape an individual's somatic reactions, so that expectations of feeling sick result in symptoms of sickness. In conclusion, the article suggests a program for research and ways of managing collective anxiety attacks.  相似文献

Because many animal diseases have strong transboundary attributes, their control can be reasonably characterised as an international public good. The potential for reservoirs of transboundary diseases to persist in developing countries that lack the capacity or incentives to control them implies a need for international financial transfers to fund control. However, the costs of control can be large compared with development assistance budgets, and the benefits small compared with the global benefits of control and the local benefits of other priority investments. This article outlines a framework for setting priorities for international development assistance for animal disease control based on the incidence of market and non‐market impacts and the context in which outbreaks take place in endemic and susceptible countries.  相似文献

The following is an evaluation of “Mad Money” host Jim Cramer's image restoration attempts during his March 2009 week-long media battle with Jon Stewart, host of “The Daily Show.” Using Benoit's (1995) image restoration theory as a conceptual framework, it is apparent that Cramer failed in restoring his reputation because he frequently coupled incongruent strategies and was unable to grasp the dynamic nature of communicative image restoration.  相似文献

Abstract

By blending the conceptual frameworks of epistemic injustice and ethical loneliness and applying them to campus-based practices of ‘risk’ identification and ‘referral’, this article describes how Mad students come to be abandoned as knowers and learners. I then dwell in and politicize the condition of (ethical) loneliness these harms produce by seeking to ‘practise’ it as a form of Mad knowing, and as a framework for visioning justice. Framing Mad student experiences in this way opens up several possibilities for epistemic justice. First, it offers additional language and interpretive resources for naming and protesting our experiences of violence. Second, it compels us to understand and attend to Mad student experiences of epistemic harm and to recognize how Mad knowledges are routinely generated in their wake. Third, it invites new ways of understanding and responding to these harms, and imagining redress.  相似文献

The body of knowledge referred to as ‘survivor research’ has grown significantly in recent years, challenging the basis of mainstream mental health knowledge and most recently manifesting in the emerging field of enquiry known as ‘Mad Studies’. The roots of these developments lie in the experiential knowledge of service users engaged in sharing their experiences and knowledge, often through peer support. I aim to challenge some of the assumptions underlying what we think we know about mental health from the mainstream mental health disciplines; and to demonstrate the value of experiential knowledge in helping us to reach a better understanding of mental health and mental distress. This article explores the nature of, and challenges to, mental health knowledge and evidence, drawing on the work of survivor researchers and people contributing to the emerging discipline of Mad Studies.  相似文献
