Application of E-Therapy Programs to the Social Work Practice

The many applications of the use of e-therapy in social work practice are reviewed. Salient issues regarding technological interventions, including ethical dilemmas, are elucidated. Applications discussed include the use of this evidence-based technology in treatment of substance abuse, anxiety disorders, depression, and other mental health diagnoses. Most significantly, e-therapy provides means of reaching 85% of clients who need services yet do not receive them.     

Theory for Community Practice in Social Work:

The effort is made to revitalize the search for practice theory which will inform and guide the community practitioner. Ecological theory is used to identify a generic model of community practice and analyze member cohesion in the three traditional modalities. The theory of energy in human ecology is developed to set the stage for an energy assessment, and the selection of strategic energy patterns in phases of organizing. Theoretical propositions with practice implications are offered for research on the relationship between strategic energy-patterns of organizing, energy costs, specialization of function, and styles of intervention.     

The Origins of Family Work: The Theory and Practice of Family Social Work Since 1880

This paper provides a detailed literary and historical account of the earliest beginnings of family theory and practice by social workers, beginning in the 1880's. The paper argues that the first widespread practice of family work’ by the helping professions was carried out by social workers, primarily women, despite this being rarely acknowledged in the family therapy literature. An analysis of gender and its place in the development of professional status and the ownership of ideas is provided.     

Generic Practice in Graduate Social Work Curricula: A Study of Educators' Experiences and Attitudes

This paper reports a study of the teaching of generic social work in graduate curricula in the United States. A key finding was that although a sizable majority of faculty supported a broad definition of generic practice, including a full range of micro and macro interventions, micro approaches were given more emphasis. Major difficulties encountered were: (1) inability to attain depth, (2) lack of faculty expertise in all components of generic practice, and (3) insufficient integration with field work. A majority of faculty lacked formal preparation for generic practice; macro practice was the area of deficiency reported. Core concepts relevant to generic practice were identified. Despite the problems, faculty believe that generic social work is a needed mode of practice.     

Psychoanalysis and Domestic Violence: Exploring the Application of Object Relations Theory in Social Work Field Placement

Psychoanalytic theories are steadily falling out of favor within many American schools of social work. This lack of emphasis on psychodynamic perspectives deprives students of the rich developmental insight that can be of particular value in field placement settings like domestic violence shelters in which mother/child dyads are typically of clinical significance. However, existing examples object relations theory applied to contexts of domestic violence often fail to interrupt the replication of a hegemonic misogyny that has historically permeated domestic violence literature. In order to avoid unduly blaming women in contexts of domestic violence, clinical social work students interested in utilizing the theory of object relations in their work must employ an array of additional analyses that focus on issues such as race, financial status, and the psychological effects of trauma.     

The Love Ethic: A Radical Theory for Social Work Practice

Love is marginalised in professional social work codes of ethics in Australia and internationally. Yet, reflecting the emancipatory imperative of social work, feminist bell hooks promotes love as a political process to transform systems of injustice such as capitalism, patriarchy, and racism. Analysing the works of hooks and other relevant literature, this article discusses “the love ethic”, a model of relationship-oriented activism encompassing dialogue, nonviolence, interconnectedness between people and between people and nature, reflexivity, shared power, and solidarity. It provides some practical suggestions for love-based social work practice, such as self-forgiveness, pursuing gender-equal relationships, upholding fair workplace conditions, honouring Indigenous peoples, supporting oppressed people to assert their rights, connecting local and global action, nurturing symbiotic relationships with nature, and supporting empowering spiritualities. The love ethic supports radical social workers to engage in activism, and necessitates further exploration within academia and practice.     

The Impact of Public Housing Policy on Family Social Work Theory and Practice

Social workers are the professionals most engaged with families living in low-income and subsidized housing and most familiar with the problems associated with inadequate housing. Yet the discussion of public housing policy has been left largely to economists and housing activists and the clear implications for family social work practice have not been made clear. To connect these critical policy and practice issues, this article provides a theoretical foundation and a review of the research supporting the use of housing vouchers to combat race and class segregation, joblessness, family breakdown, inferior public services, child abuse, mental illness and crime victimization.     

Application of Psychological and Sociological Theory to Teaching Social Work with the Group

Ethnic minority content as a substantive curriculum area in social work education evolved as a response to the times. However, the “what” and the “why” have never been fully addressed. In fact, ethnic minority content is not based on any discernable theoretical framework. A questionnaire was mailed to all ethnic minority doctoral students in the United States. The responses supported the need for a theoretical framework. A curriculum model was proposed utilizing the concepts of socialization, pluralism, and sociocultural dissonance. The focus was on the presentation of seminal ideas that would propel others toward development of more definitive models appropriate for their educational situations.     

The Cycles of Social Work Practice

The social work profession has vascillated between addressing two different priorities during its history: personal troubles and public issues. The focus on personal troubles emphasizes the private interests, rehabilitation, and self-actualization needs of individuals. Public issues refers to collective needs, social action, and social reform. These riorities shaped the emergence of three distinct methods of social work practice-casework, groupwork, and community organization. This paper links these cyclical shifts in priorities to the socio-economic and political forces in American society, and suggests ways that the profession might sustain a practice framework that IS not so easily influenced by political cycles.     

Rotational Field Placements: Integrative Review and Application to Gerontological Social Work

Despite the long held social work tradition of year-long field placements, there is a growing trend among social work programs in the United States to include a rotational field placement (RFP) track, particularly for gerontology students. Through the RFP program, students rotate systematically between multiple placement sites within the academic school year. Inclusion of RFP models represents a decisive break from traditional field practicum models, raising fundamental questions with regards to educational outcomes and student experience. This article provides a comprehensive review of available empirical data on social work RFP programs, summarizing the benefits, risks and problem areas associated with such models as well as model design options and added structural supports social work programs have used to bolster the success of their RFP programs.
