WE, the staff of Women of China would like to wish you a happy new year. Last autumn, the Seventh National Congress of Chinese Women was held in Beijing. It summarized the experience of the women's movement, the kind of work done by women during the reform and opening over the last 15 years, and defined the task for the women's movement in the 1990s. The successes have greatly insoired millions of Chinese women to thrive for the country. Our magazine will report more about all nationalities of women who are involved in the reform and

Picturing African‐Americans: Readers reading magazine advertisements

In recent years, advertisements depicting stereotypes of African‐Americans have given way to advertising images that show African‐Americans as middle‐ and upper class consumers. This articles uses photo‐elicitation to study the meaning readers attach to advertising images of African‐American success. The results provide insight into how advertisements pull readers into a web of ideological meanings. The results also show how other social structures and their discursive frameworks, e.g., religion, education, political ideology, media and social class mitigate, inflect, deflect and reinforce readers’ readings of advertisements.     

Queering the Language? A Roundtable on Jargon in Queer Studies

Within colleges and universities, and academic circles generally, as in other fields, a certain jargon or distinguishable language has developed. There are those who assert that this academic jargon is used to add precision in the transmission of ideas, or to provide a certain degree of legitimacy to a comparatively young academic discipline, while others contend that this “academise” is needlessly dense and exclusionary setting up a hierarchy of knowledge. Three individuals with varying relationships to the “academy” discuss this ongoing controversy within queer studies. The discussants include Paul B. Franklin, a doctoral candidate in the Fine Arts Department at Harvard University. He is currently writing a dissertation on the place of homosexuality in modern art. Adrien Saks is a Boston activist, writer, and publicist. He is the coeditor of Revelations: Gay Men’s Coming Out Stories and the former Marketing Director of Alyson Publications. This is his third year on the planning committee of OutWrite: The National Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Writing Conference. Amanda Udis-Kessler is a bisexual sociologist with an interest in race, class, and gender inequality. Her work has appeared in eight books and a number of journals. An acquisitions editor for the journal Empathy, she is currently writing a social history of the bisexual movement/identity.

Dear readers, Women of China was first issued in 1956, a full 40 years ago. In that time, the magzine's format has changed from a quarterly, to a bi-monthly, to a monthly. Our magazine is distributed in more than 130 countries and regions and is well-received by our readers. Women of China is a comprehensive English monthly concerned with the conditions of Chinese women. It aims to enhance contacts and exchanges between Chinese women and women from all over the world, and to increase their understanding and friendship. Parents’ Beliefs about Emotions and Children’s Recognition of Parents’ Emotions

This study investigated parents’ emotion-related beliefs, experience, and expression, and children’s recognition of their parents’ emotions with 40 parent-child dyads. Parents reported beliefs about danger and guidance of children’s emotions. While viewing emotion-eliciting film clips, parents self-reported their emotional experience and masking of emotion. Children and observers rated videos of parents watching emotion-eliciting film clips. Fathers reported more masking than mothers and their emotional expressions were more difficult for both observers and children to recognize compared with mothers’ emotional expressions. For fathers, but not mothers, showing clearer expressions was related to children’s general skill at recognizing emotional expressions. Parents who believe emotions are dangerous reported greater masking of emotional expression. Contrary to hypothesis, when parents strongly believe in guiding their child’s emotion socialization, children showed less accurate recognition of their parents’ emotions.

‘We Don’t Need Another Hero’

The collapse of the Berlin Wall is usually associated with images of progress, with falling autocrats and rising liberties. But things are not quite as straightforward if scrutinized from the vantage-point of women. Despite their unusually active participation in the mass protests of 1989, women in the eastern part of Germany suffered a series of setbacks in the subsequent unification process, most notably in the realms of reproductive rights, employment opportunities and access to affordable day-care. This article engages contending feminist approaches in East and West Germany in an attempt to highlight the controversial but central role the concept of patriarchy occupies in understanding the gendered effects of unification. To recognize the significance of patriarchal domination is not to deny that some forms of dissent - and even emancipatory transformation - have taken place. It does, however, necessitate an understanding of gender-related domination and resistance that focuses not only on heroic revolutionary events and on political, legal and institutional features, but also, and perhaps even primarily, on relatively mundane daily struggles that take place over values and societal expectations.

Encouraging elementary students to become aware of place and the role it plays in shaping their lives can provide them with a clearer sense of self and a greater appreciation for diversity. To support this premise, this article explores using six National Council for the Social Studies Notable Trade Books to assist primary students in their understanding of place. By using realistic fiction and nonfiction picture books that focus on children's lives in diverse locations, the suggested activities enable teachers to address the five themes of geography and promote cultural awareness to elementary students in meaningful ways. The author provides a summary of each book and describes student-centered activities to develop concepts related to the NCSS thematic strands of culture; people, places, and environments; and individual development and identity.     

Pathological Gamblers: Inpatients’ versus Outpatients’ Characteristics

Several researchers and clinicians have questioned the advantages and disadvantages of inpatient and outpatient treatment for people suffering from pathological gambling. This study compares the characteristics of pathological gamblers seeking inpatient and outpatient treatment. A total of 233 pathological gamblers (inpatients = 134, outpatients = 99) participated in the study. Results show that inpatients have more severe gambling problems than those receiving outpatient services. Similar results were obtained on most other related variables such as anxiety, depression, alcohol consumption, and comorbidity. These results are discussed in terms of the costs and benefits of these two treatment modalities.
