ABSTRACTProviding effective services to clients with increasingly severe challenges in an era of fiscal constraints calls for schools of social work to assume greater responsibility for preparing interns for clinical practice. This article describes a virtual field practicum (VFP), an online skill-building experience designed to meet this need and reports preliminary findings. The VFP employs client simulation and other experiential activities; its intent is to foster student acquisition of core competencies prior to agency placement. Longitudinal data were collected on VFP students and their traditional counterparts across 4 semesters. Results show that VFP students performed as well, if not slightly better, on competency measures than traditional students, suggesting that this model is a viable option for educators to consider. 相似文献

Abstract Students are unable to empower their clients to the extent that they themselves are empowered. In afield practicum based in a low-income community it was found that students' sense of empowerment depended on the kind of feedback they received from others. The critical source of feedback was the field instructor. A field setting with limited structural supports has proved to be liberating to the majority of students but overwhelming for some. 相似文献

Practicum instructors play a strategic role in assisting students gain the competence essential to effective practice. This article reports on a comparative study that tested the efficacy of traditional and experimental competency-based/task-centered methods of practicum instruction. This paper describes both the process of developing a new course on women and the content of such a course. Four issues that arose in introducing the course are critically examined: separation versus integration of course content; sexism versus racism; intellectual versus experiential learning; and women only versus coeducational enrollment. Throughout the paper, comparisons are made between basic tenets of social work practice and the women's movement. The deontological philosophy of Immanuel Kant (1724–1804) provides a powerful framework for the analysis of ethical dilemmas. Kant's philosophy is discussed and applied to what this research poses as the "practical model for ethical decision making" (see Figure 1). This Kantian model establishes an ethical consideration triangle and incorporates symmetrical communication. The issues management of 2 global organizations was used as an empirical test of the model and to refine it for practical implementation.
