Student Unit: The Advantages and Disadvantages of Group Placement

Social work supervision has been traditionally seen as central to social work training. Its focus was the emphasis on the one-to-one relationship between student and supervisor. The master-apprentice model prevailed. It is probably because of this that group supervision is a relatively late and still quite rare development, in spite of the fact that field placement resources are strained in practically every School.

Using Suggested Contributions in Fundraising for Public Good

This article presents a provision point mechanism experiment designed to investigate the impact of suggested contributions in a public-good contribution process. We find that suggesting contributions is ineffective if subjects value the public good equally. However, if valuations for the public good differ among individuals, as they do in the real world, we find that contribution suggestions increase the likelihood of providing the public good, increase the fraction of individuals contributing their suggested share, and improve the equity of the distribution of contributions.

A Support Group for Families who have Children in Care: an Evaluative Case Study

This article evaluates an attempt to establish a support group for parents and relatives whose children are in care in one health board in Ireland. It uses a qualitative methodology, drawing on a group evaluation session, supplemented by individual interviews with the members of that group. The paper shows that it was successful in so far as it provided members with a forum where they felt accepted, where their rights as parents were validated, their self-esteem enhanced and informal access provided to senior social workers. Finally, the paper suggests ways in which the therapeutic potential of such groups could be enhanced and more needy parents attracted into them.     

A Suggestion for Reference Group Theory: Ideational Referents and Group Referents*

A Unit in Current Events

The authors encourage teachers to make use of existing, standard social studies curriculum to uncover and to make visible the normative assumptions that underlie American cultural beliefs about gender and sexuality. The article provides an overview of how some cultures within the various Native American nations conceptualize gender and sexuality in ways that challenge Western norms. An example lesson plan addressing Two Spirit history is included as well as reflections from teachers who have taught the curriculum in their classrooms.

Offering Social Support via the Internet: A Case Study of an Online Support Group for Social Workers

SUMMARY

Human service professionals have begun to explore the Internet's potential as a therapeutic medium for individuals, families and groups, but we still know very little about the ways that Internet-mediated communication affects interventions. This paper uses examples from a recent study of a short-term, listserv-based support group that helps social workers cope with job stress to discuss issues related to the use of online support groups.     

Narrative Group Therapy with the Seriously Mentally Ill: A Case Study

This paper describes a process set up to facilitate a group of people living with a serious mental illness. The group was based on Anthony's notions of recovery, and incorporated a narrative approach, while remaining consistent with Northen's groupwork model. Particular attention is paid to the preplanning and initial session of the group, to the use of letters and to the incorporation of a reflective team approach. Documentation of the discoveries made by the group members during its life is included in full.     

A Community-Based Multiple Family Group Intervention for Sheltered Families

Abstract

This study evaluates the effectiveness of a multiple family group intervention developed to improve familial functioning and decrease the frequency of children's behavior problems while families are living in shelters and as they prepare to transition back into more permanent living conditions. The skill-based curriculum focuses on diminishing stress, while helping strengthen families' beliefs, cohesion and structure. Nineteen adults and thirty-five children from five shelters across a mid-south metropolitan area participated in the study. The results showed significant reductions in parents' perceived stress and improvements in families' level of cohesion and their children's maladaptive behaviors. Moreover, effect sizes showed that these changes were clinically significant as well.
