This paper reports on a communication assessment/development and evaluation program for directors, managers, and supervisors of a large metropolitan welfare department, with the involvement of the School of Social Work faculty at the University of Minnesota and a communications consultant, through the mechanism of a staff development project. In addition, it points out three significant future challenges oriented toward: (1) school of social work curriculum development, (2) responsibility of welfare agencies to provide training opportunities in management and communication, and (3) the support needs of governmental agencies.  相似文献

In a curriculum mapping project, the mapping process of an MSW program is documented and linked with the Council on Social Works Education’s 2015 Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards competencies. It starts with the background of creating a mapping process for sequencing and integrating a series of assessment tasks with mapping exercises. An example focusing on this program’s clinical specialization is provided. Curriculum mapping is defined as a step-by-step process of visualizing and evaluating teaching content for curriculum studies, from generalist to specialization. This process explains how to map and improve social work curricula with component analyses and provides suggestions for planning future mapping visualization exercises prior to reaffirmation studies.  相似文献

Partial privatization of Social Security is being considered as an integral part of the future Social Security program for American retirees. Because privatization creates uncertainty about the amount of retirement income that future retirees may expect to receive, the issue of a safety net is critical. This article presents the findings from an empirical study that investigated the degree to which the current Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) programs provide a safety net, separately and in combination, to the elderly poor. The major findings were that the Social Security program not only increases the income statuses of both posttransfer and pretransfer poor elderly people considerably, but that the program also significantly equalizes the distribution of income among them. In addition, the SSI program supplements the Social Security program in establishing an even greater safety net, especially for posttransfer poor elderly people. On the other hand, Social Security benefits make the income disparity among races greater between both posttransfer and pretransfer poor elderly people. Implications for policy are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

The National Association of Social Workers developed a methodology for conducting systematic content analysis of social work jobs and the curriculum of a social work program. Although the methodology was created so employers could respond to the declassification phenomenon, potentially it is quite valuable as a curriculum development tool in social work education. A social work program in New Zealand illustrates the usefulness of this approach in curriculum development.  相似文献

Research on the values of social workers and the effect of education on professional socialization is examined with particular reference to self-selection, the role of age in openness to the changes required, the effectiveness of explication in communication of specific values, and the need for campus and field faculty to present compatible models to students. The writer's own research using the Varley Social Work Questionnaire is described and discussed. Implications for admissions and curriculum development are offered.  相似文献

This study determined the effect of a continuing education (CE) program on increasing social workers’ knowledge about global issues and subsequently influencing decisions for future practice. Thirty-eight participants took a CE course (3-session face-to-face or 1-month online) on global issues. Social Work Practitioner Globalization Survey was used to test participants’ (1) knowledge about globalization and global references, (2) belief about the importance of globalization for making practice decisions, and (3) intent to seek global knowledge in the future. Pre- and postcourse data from 32 respondents showed increases in knowledge, belief, and intended action toward the use of globalization knowledge in social work practice. Findings help social work educators justify and plan curricula that infuse globalization and global issues as curriculum components.  相似文献

Social work practitioners today are having to deal with ever-increasing numbers of families falling into the at risk category. At the same time, the issues and problems facing these family units are often overwhelming and challenging to resolve. The E.S.S.E. Group Model, outlined in this article, is a new research based approach that was designed to address the most relevant concerns facing families today. It is a unique program that combines family life education within a support group framework. Initially, the model was developed for several school districts in the midwest. Counseling personnel had identified a need for a parent training program that would elicit higher levels of participation. The E.S.S.E. Model accomplishes that goal through its structured yet individualized curriculum along with its parallel and conjoint group set-up. The specific content and process guidelines of this new approach make it easy for clinicians to duplicate in a wide variety of settings. One of the model's curriculums is outlined in detail in this article. Readers will find that the E.S.S.E. program serves as an excellent example of the type of group intervention needed today to help revitalize at-risk families.  相似文献

The Hebrew University School of Social Work initiated a 2-year BSW program for ultra-orthodox women with a prior BA degree from a recognized university. This program adhered to the curriculum of the school and courses were taught by university faculty and field instructors. To encourage enrollment and show sensitivity to the needs of this population, classes were held on the campus of an ultra-orthodox women's seminary. The culture of social work consists of professional beliefs, values and behaviors. This program enabled an interface of students entrenched in the ultra-orthodox world, as encoded in the halacha (Jewish law representing beliefs and values, and dictating behaviors), with that of the social work profession. We were confronted with the challenge of integrating these two cultures. The main objective was to make the knowledge and skills of social work available to these women. Because of the two different systems, there are inherent conflicts which are bound to arise. An ongoing educational challenge was to resolve these conflicts. Minda Garr, lecturer at the Paul Baerwald School of Social Work, is the academic coordinator of the program described, and Goldie Marans of the Baerwald School of Social Work, is the field coordinator of this program.  相似文献

Social work education is well positioned for workforce development initiatives that prepare practitioners to use Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) with people at risk for alcohol use disorders. This article presents preliminary process and outcome evaluation data from the first year of a three-year grant which suggests that the training is acceptable and results in significant changes in trainees’ knowledge, attitudes, and self-perceived SBIRT skills. Training was embedded within the curricula of an urban school of social work, which includes a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program and a single-concentration clinical Master of Social Work (MSW). Trainees included social work students (n = 134) and field instructors (n = 38). More than 90% of students were very satisfied or satisfied with the training, and 100% of field instructors rated the training as excellent or good. Students demonstrated significant changes from pre- to posttraining in substance use knowledge, confidence in SBIRT skills, and attitudes about integrating SBIRT into practice. Field instructors reported increased confidence in screening. Integrating SBIRT training into social work curriculum is a promising method of developing a workforce that can effectively prevent and alleviate alcohol misuse.  相似文献

Abstract

Social work is becoming a more politically oriented profession. In addition, social work education is including politics as a greater part of the curriculum. Still, much more can be done to increase the amount of political content in social work education. This paper describes a model for involving students in political social work without drastically altering current arrangements. The model consists of two parts: a class on politics and social work and field practica in state legislators' district offices. Following a discussion of the literature on education for political social work, we look closely at the Social Work and Politics Initiative. We also examine problems encountered with the program.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Is it possible to conduct an effective, progressive, and politicized program for graduate students in our contemporary conservative context? This article evaluates the outcomes over seven years of a pioneering program in Political Social Work. Based on survey data of Political Social Work alumni, it addresses four outcome measures: enrollment, satisfaction with curriculum and field opportunities, job and career development, and persistence of political ideology and practice. While being “political” during the past decade is clearly different than it was in the 1960s, the evidence proposes that political content and practice can have a significant place in both social work education and the field. More specifically, the study demonstrates that politicized social workers in the 1990s were able after graduation to secure employment, sustain progressive values, and practice political social work.  相似文献

This paper presents a conceptual framework for viewing social planning and social administration as one “seamless web” of activity concerned with the identification of goals and the development of appropriate administrative structures for their implementation. The major educational implication of this analysis is that curriculum planning should maximize the integration of social policy, social planning, and administration. Alternative approaches to achieving this integration are discussed using data from a recent Council on Social Work Education survey.  相似文献

A survey of 87 accredited baccalaureate social work programs assessed ethnic minority content in the curriculum. Respondents described specialized courses, those with a "primary focus" (75-100% of course time) on ethnic minority curriculum, in three major topical areas: (1) curriculum content, (2) resources (e.g., textbooks, guest speakers, case studies), and (3) future implications. The majority of respondents (68%) participate in programs with these specialized courses, and indicate that curriculum content is broad in scope. They perceive resources as being readily available, current program curricula as adequate, and a strong momentum for future growth.  相似文献

This article presents one portion of the findings from a research study of the relationship between a student's prior experience and his performance in solving social work problems commonly found in a first-year MSW program. It reports a beginning effort to find variables that appear to differentiate high-scoring students on the principal research instrument with previous work experience in social work, from low-scoring students. The findings should be of particular interest to members of admissions committees and to faculty involved in curriculum planning for advanced entering students to the master's program in social work.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Social workers currently engage in financial capability practice with low-income and financially vulnerable individuals and families in diverse practice settings, but typically lack professional preparation for this work. In response, several schools of social work have begun adopting financial capability curricula. Using an in-depth interview methodology, this study examines the adoption of a curriculum in financial capability and asset building (FCAB) from the perspectives of faculty and administrators (N = 19) at four historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Findings show that key reasons for curriculum adoption are prior working relationships and trust, relevance of FCAB content to student and community needs, and alignment with program, institutional, and professional goals. Using the diffusion of innovation theory to understand curriculum adoption in HBCUs suggests that perhaps trust and relationship building are particularly important in the case of minority serving institutions.  相似文献

The practice of social innovation offers promising approaches for addressing social issues. Although many social innovation strategies are congruent with macro social work theory and practice, some of the insights and tactics that have emerged in the social innovation field have the potential to strengthen current macro practice. Based on our experiences with the social innovation program at the Boston College School of Social Work, we focus on 5 aspects of the social innovation cycle and suggest social innovation content that can be incorporated into macro social work curriculum.  相似文献

Recent years have seen rapid technological changes and these have impacted on social work and social work education. Social work educators struggle to keep pace with these changes. Drawing on the author's own experience, this article outlines some key resources that are available to social work educators and students, reflects on the role of 'Communication and Information Technology' within the social work curriculum, and looks towards future developments in relation to online learning.  相似文献

Abstract

Social work has a history of treating the whole person in his/her environment, however, the effort to be scientific in our approach to clinical practice often has obscured our examination of the religious and spiritual beliefs and practices of our clients and in our own lives. Consequently, there has been very little guidance to date on how curriculum can help integrate the professional identities of MSW/MDiv students. An elective practice course, “The Role of Religion and Spirituality in Clinical Social Work” in our accredited graduate social work program provides a transitional space for this integration to occur through a guiding framework of psychodynamic, systems, and postmodern theories.  相似文献

Social services are instrumental in addressing challenges associated with aging. Yet, practitioners report needing expanded gerontological knowledge and better supervision. The Supervisory Leaders in Aging (SLA) program of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) was designed to improve gerontological services by strengthening supervision of the social service workforce. With support from the John A. Hartford Foundation, the program was adopted between 2015 and 2017 in four regions, where NASW trained 134 MSW supervisors who support 1200 social service staff, potentially enhancing the well-being of 264,000 clients annually. The SLA curriculum and in-person educational approach constitute a model for supervisor professional development. Quality improvement evaluations suggested feasibility of program adoption and acceptability. Participants rated each of 10 workshops and 97% agreed that instructors were effective, that knowledge was expanded, and that content was relevant, appropriate, and likely to be used. Implications of this model for enhancing supervisory practice are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) curriculum design is generally considered a collaborative process involving educators, students, practitioners, and employers. The social agency contributes in critical economic, pedagogical, and political ways. The literature is ambiguous, however, regarding compatibility of educators' and practitioners' views on curricula, homogeneity of perceived training needs, and societal changes necessitating curriculum revision. In this study, 77 agency personnel reported their views of 56 BSW curriculum items. The development of communication competence, the mastery of content on socialization and the small group, and the cultivation of basic social work values were commonly viewed as essential. BSW program directors, graduates, and potential employers generally had compatible views. Practice conditions—especially service position (direct or indirect), field of practice, and client age group—influenced curriculum priorities. Changes in educational priorities across a decade were minor, with increasing emphasis on ethical practice, especially as related to confidentiality.  相似文献
