Using data drawn from the Current Population Surveys, this paper provides a consistent explanation for why the presence of
a working wife reduces the husband’s wage among managers, but increases the husband’s wage among non-managers. It is not husband’s
occupation per se but rather the distribution of husbands’ wage levels that underlies the working spouse penalty or premium.
Positive correlations in earnings between married couples that arise from assortative mating make the cross-wage effects of
the husbands’ wages on the wives’ hours of work first positive, then negative in cross-sectional data. The phenomenon of a
working spouse penalty/premium is simply the flip side of this relationship.

No completely satisfactory explanation for the persistent and well-documented large-firm wage premium has been found. I use
a novel adaptation of the Oaxaca/Blinder wage discrimination model to examine the firm-size wage differential which allows
the wage differential to be decomposed into the portions attributable to (1) differences in employee endowments, (2) how the
firm values these endowments, and (3) residual differences. Small firms actually pay higher wages based on how they value
their workers’ endowments, but this wage premium was overshadowed by the superior endowments of workers in large firms and
a residual differential in favor of large firms.

By matching industry/occupation data on training to displaced worker data from the Current Population Surveys, this paper
analyzes why many older workers were displaced by technological changes in the 1990s, and why these workers incurred large
earnings losses. When technological changes depreciate the existing stock of firm-specific human capital, older workers who
receive higher wages from the sharing arrangement of the returns to investment in firm-specific human capital are dismissed
as firms find it unprofitable to retain them. These displaced workers have higher predisplacement wages with steeper wage–tenure
profiles, and hence incur larger earnings losses after displacement than other displaced workers.

This paper provides insight into the wage gap between lesbians and heterosexual women. Using data from the 2000 Decennial
Census, we find a lesbian premium that equals approximately 10% for women without a bachelor’s degree, and is nearly non-existent
for women with higher levels of education. These findings are consistent with proposition that the gap between lesbians’ and
heterosexual women’s commitment to the labor market narrows at higher levels of education. We also find that controls for
industry and occupation exert only a small effect on the gap between lesbian and heterosexual women’s wages.

We analyze the effect that state licensing of radiologic technologists (RTs) has had upon RT wages with a unique dataset that
allows us to control for place of work and job specialization. Using OLS and several measures of licensing, we find evidence
that RTs working in states with licensing statutes earn as much as 3.3% more than RTs working in states without licensing.
When we control for endogeneity using instrumental variables (IV) estimation, our estimate of the licensing premium doubles
(6.9%). Our results provide further support for existing theories of the effects of occupational licensing on the wages of
practitioners.

Using cross-country data, we investigate the determinants of reservation wages and their course over the jobless spell. Higher
unemployment benefits lead to higher reservation wages. Further, again consistent with the basic search model, repeated observations
on the same individual provide scant evidence of declining reservation wages.

This paper uses matched employee–employer LIAB data to provide panel estimates of the structure of labor demand in western
Germany, 1993–2002, distinguishing between highly skilled, skilled, and unskilled labor and between the manufacturing and
service sectors. Reflecting current preoccupations, our demand analysis seeks also to accommodate the impact of technology
and trade in addition to wages. The bottom-line interests are to provide elasticities of the demand for unskilled (and other)
labor that should assist in short-run policy design and to identify the extent of skill biases or otherwise in trade and technology.

Using data from the American Time Use Survey for the years 2003–2006, this paper finds that housework has a negative relation
with wages for both women and men. The negative relation between housework time and wages is not likely to arise from omitted
working conditions that are correlated with housework, nor from omitted effort. For women, the negative relation between housework
and wages appears in most occupations, including professional and managerial occupations. The connection of housework time
to the ‘lack of interest’ argument proposed by defendants in class action sex discrimination cases is examined and is not
supported by the evidence.

This study reports a meta-analysis of 75 estimates of the efficiency-wage effect. It reveals a strong efficiency-wage effect
that depends upon whether researchers control for potential simultaneity between wages and productivity. Studies that control

This paper provides a multilayered analysis of how lesbian mothers and gay fathers construct their families in a social context
that has been described by Steven Seidman (2004) as “beyond the closet.” We stress how our participants’ family-building experiences are comparable to other non-biologically
related families, but distinct due to heterosexual dominance. Using in-depth qualitative interviews with 18 lesbian birth
mothers and 22 gay fathers, the authors discuss how participants navigate heterosexual dominance in institutions and in personal
interactions.

I use Swedish establishment-level panel data to test the hypothesis of Bertola and Rogerson (Eur Econ Rev 41:1147–1171 1997) of a positive relation between the degree of wage compression and job reallocation. Results indicate that the effect of
wage compression on job turnover is positive and significant in the manufacturing sector. The wage compression effect is stronger
on job destruction than on job creation, consistent with downward wage rigidity. Further results include a strong positive
relationship between the fraction of temporary employees and job turnover and a negative relationship between the amount of
working-time flexibility and job reallocation.

Using a unique data source on marital status, partnership and sexual orientation of academics and administrators at British
universities, we estimate the impact of personal relationships upon earnings for men and women. While university data cover
a relatively homogeneous group of workers, the two sides of the university are very different, with administrative jobs being
more like the general job market in the economy. We find a large and significant married male premium, but only on the administrative
side of the university. There is no female marriage premium, and no partnership return to gay men or to either heterosexual
or homosexual women.

It is a stylized fact that marriage formation involves positive assortative matching on education. We also find this in the
case of immigrants, even when they tend to “import” their spouses and potentially trade off education for other favorable
characteristics. For Pakistanis, we find positive compensating differentials in terms of high education to youth having adopted
host country norms, when marrying a marriage migrant. This indicates that Pakistani marriage migrants pay a premium to be
able to marry and live in Denmark. For Turks, individuals having source country norms pay a premium in order to import a partner,
indicating that unspoiled traditional norms are traded off for education.

It is well-known that married men earn more than comparable single men, with typical estimates of the male marriage premium
in the range of 10–20%. Some research also finds that cohabiting men earn more than men not living with a female partner.
This study uses data from the General Social Survey and the National Health and Social Life Survey to examine whether a similar
premium accrues to gay men who live with a male partner and whether cohabiting gay men have different observable characteristics
than non-cohabiting gay men. Controlling for observable characteristics, cohabiting gay men do not earn significantly more
than other gay men or more than unmarried heterosexual men. Cohabiting heterosexual men also do not earn more than non-cohabiting
heterosexual men.

The theoretical and empirical literature on parental investment focuses on whether child-specific parental investments reinforce
or compensate for a child’s initial endowments. However, many parental investments, such as neighborhood quality and family
size and structure, are shared wholly or in part among all children in a household. The empirical results of this paper imply
that such household parental investments compensate for low endowments, as proxied by low birth weight.

consolidation of trading infrastructures and, on the other hand, on the diversification of the business model. New “conglomeral
exchanges” are characterized by a far-reaching production function. Since they integrate product-service lines which are complementary,

This paper examines the earnings differentials among hospital workers in the public, private nonprofit, and private for-profit
sectors. Utilizing data from the 1995 through 2007 Current Population Surveys, unadjusted earnings are highest in the private
nonprofit sector and lowest in private for-profit firms. Once measurable characteristics are accounted for, health practitioners
in for-profit and nonprofit hospitals earn similar wages while public sector workers earn small but significant wage penalties.
Nonprofit hospitals tend to attract workers with higher levels of skill as measured by schooling and potential experience.
This could be explained in part by worker sorting and lower cost containment incentives in nonprofit hospitals. Wage change
analysis using pooled 2-year panels constructed from the CPS indicate no significant differences in earnings between the three
sectors of employment. Whatever the role of the sector of employment on the overall earnings of hospital workers, there is
sufficient worker mobility within the industry to largely eliminate systematic wage differences across type of hospital.

We suggest a methodology to calibrate a collective model with household-specific bargaining rules and marriage-specific preferences
that incorporate leisure externalities. The empirical identification relies on the assumption that some aspects of individual
preferences remain the same after marriage, so that estimation on single individuals can be used. The procedure maps the complete
Pareto frontier of each household in the dataset and we define alternative measures of a power index. The latter is then regressed
on relevant bargaining factors, including a set of variables retracing the potential relative contributions of the spouses
to household disposable income. In its capacity to handle complex budget sets and labor force participation decisions of both
spouses, this framework allows the comparison of unitary and collective predictions of labor supply reactions and welfare
changes entailed by fiscal reforms in a realistic setting (see Michal Myck et al., 2006; Denis Beninger et al., 2006).

This study investigates the impact of personal finance education delivered in high school and college. Outcomes of interest
were investment knowledge and household savings rates measured years after the financial education was delivered. A web-based
survey with questions about participation in financial education, financial experiences, income and inheritances, and demographic
characteristics was administered to 1,039 alumni from a large midwestern university. Participation in a college level personal
finance course was associated with higher levels of investment knowledge. Experience with financial instruments appeared to
explain more of the variance in both investment knowledge and savings rates. No significant relationship between taking a
high school course and investment knowledge was found. Financial experiences were found to be positively associated with savings
rates.

This paper proposes a comparison of the results of tax policy analysis obtained on the basis of unitary and collective representations
of the household. We first generate labour supplies consistent with the collective rationality, by use of a model calibrated
on microdata as described in Vermeulen et al. [Collective Models of Household Labor Supply with Nonconvex Budget Sets and
Nonparticipation: A Calibration Approach (2006)]. A unitary model is then estimated on these collective data and unitary and collective responses to a tax reform are compared.
We focus on the introduction of linear taxation in Germany. The exercise is replicated for other European countries and other
topical reforms. Distortions due to the use of a unitary model turn out to be important in predicting labour supply adjustments,
in the design of tax revenue neutral reforms, and in predicting a reform’s welfare implications.
