In this article, we explore the ways in which partnerships with the state within state-led developmental programs might effect
the autonomy of civic organizations (COs) and their readiness to enter in political action. To identify the relationship between
collaboration with the state and civic autonomy we draw on data from a survey of 740 Hungarian regional civic associations.
We did not find support for the theses that mixing with the state might undermine the autonomy of COs and lead to their political
neutralization. Also, we did not find support for the hypotheses that political action is solely about money or it is the
property of non-autonomous NGOs. We have identified several mechanisms that allow COs to combine participation in partnership
projects with maintained autonomy and political activism.

Based on the current global financial crisis, the article introduces two recent typical perspectives on international order
from the angle of discussion on the decline of the US, pointing out that the real trend of the development of international
political economic order is flatenization. International power will be distributed in a flat model. In this kind of order
big powers, main regional nation groups and important international organizations and institutions will share power in an
increasingly equal way. The demands for reform of the international financial system against this financial crisis also reflect
the trend of flatenization of the international political economic order.

This paper compares climate change campaigns conducted by environmental nongovernment organizations (NGOs) in the United Kingdom
(UK) and Australia. The NGOs represent a diversity of political access, financial resources, and international connections.
Three campaign activities common to both countries undertaken between 2004 and 2006 are analyzed for their effectiveness via
interviews and document review. This examination is embedded within an analysis of the political, economic, policy, and social
contexts of each country. It is shown that in the UK climate change has been used as a pivotal leadership issue, that the
fossil fuel industry’s influence is not predominant, and that NGOs enjoy political legitimacy. Whereas, in Australia climate
change has only recently emerged as a political priority, the fossil fuel industry has had significant political and financial
influence, and NGO advocacy has been marginalized. It is argued that NGOs are embedded in the political and policy contexts
of their country, and the greatest campaign traction and NGO influence can only be achieved when these contexts provide favorable
conditions.

This paper examines the organizational structures of nonprofit organizations in Australia and the United States. Using random
samples of nonprofits drawn from the two organizational populations, the analysis compares the extent of structural resemblance
or isomorphism in each. It detects similar levels of isomorphism for several structural characteristics. The paper interprets
this finding as reflecting expectations for nonprofit organizations that stretch worldwide.

This paper analyzes how natural resource interests have been translated into political outcomes in the form of American climate
change policy. Incorporating data about natural resource use and national decision-making, this paper concludes that comprehending
fully political decisions about global climate change in the United States requires us to recognize how land-use interests
in the growth machine are translated into political outcomes. The findings of this paper suggest that, in order to understand
social phenomena more fully, sociologists must recommit to studying the conjoint constitution of natural resources and social
processes.

The article explores political meanings in the context of recent economic and political changes in a village in south India.
Cultural constructions of political relations emerged in conversations between the author and village informants in Andhra
Pradesh. Informants perceived decline in the power and authority of former village lords and talked about the establishment
of authority in the new setting. In processes of democratization which had taken place, showing and receiving honor and respect
continued as political and social preoccupations. However, deserving honor and respect has become less a statement about political
superiority and domination and more about individual moral qualities.

In this article social movement theory is used to assess the strategic repertoire of a relatively new sector of nongovernmental
organizations (NGOs) advocating for migrants rights in Ireland. Pro-migrant NGOs are majority community-led and face a challenging
political and societal context for mobilization including a restrictive immigration regime, political and media discourse
that racializes migrants, weak public support for the expansion of migrants’ rights, and high rates of discrimination and
social exclusion experienced by migrant communities. A competitive funding environment also inhibits pro-migrant NGOs capacity
to work with emerging migrant-led organizations that simultaneously compete for state and foundation funds. Pro-migrant NGOs
in Ireland have responded with a three levelled strategy, namely alliance building with sympathetic public officials and service
and information provision to state bodies, campaigns contesting negative media and societal framing of migrants, and networking
with transnational NGO coalitions working on immigration issues.

This study analyses the relationships between export, import and economic growth for the 13 transition economies. Empirical
results show that there is a unidirectional causality from economic growth to export. Empirical findings show that the growth-led
export hypothesis is valid in those countries and growth is rather shaped by increase in import demand.

Plurality rule is mostly criticized from being capable of choosing an alternative considered as worst by a strict majority.
This paper considers elections in which the agenda consists of potential candidates strategically choosing whether or not
to enter the election. In this context, we examine the ability of scoring rules to fulfil the Condorcet criterion. We show
for the case of three potential candidates that Plurality rule is the only scoring rule that satisfies a version of the Condorcet
criterion in two cases: 1) when preferences are single-peaked and, 2) when preferences are single-dipped.

Drawing data from works of political non-fiction that help to reveal the moral and sensual underpinnings of political practice,
this paper seeks to adumbrate a sensualist understanding of political engagement. After beginning with a brief discussion
of Weber’s seminal essay “Politics as a Vocation,” I then construct an ideal type of political passion with which to highlight
the inherent shortcomings that plague traditional explanations of political action. My argument is that these approaches are
all vitiated by their reliance on Chinese-box epistemology. I go on to suggest that in order to obtain a genuinely sociological
account of political engagement, one must develop methods that are true to the experiential specifics of politics while recognizing
the conditions that shape the possibility of those very experiences.

In recent years, both Australia and New Zealand have embarked on significant labor market reforms which have resulted in more
decentralized and individualized systems of industrial relations. Although both countries share a common heritage of state-sponsored
conciliation and arbitration, which fostered a centralized approach to labor market regulation, each has responded in its
own way to economic and political pressures to reform its long-established industrial relations system. Despite differences
in the process of indusrial relations reform, both countries now have industrial relations systems which are more individualistic
and in which unions play a less significant role than in the past.

Top-Down Civic Projects Are Not Grassroots Associations: How The Differences Matter in Everyday Life

Research on civic associations blurs an important distinction between the unfunded, informal, ongoing associations that theorists
like de Tocqueville described versus current participatory democracy projects that are funded by the state and large nongovernmental
organizations, are open to all, and are usually short-term. Based on a long-term ethnography of youth programs in the United
States, this paper shows that entities like these, which participants and researchers alike often called “volunteer” or “civic”
groups, operate very differently from traditional civic groups. The ethnography systematically details prevalent tensions
that actors face when they try to cultivate the civic spirit in these increasingly typical organizations.

The majority of Greek nonprofit organizations active in the field of human services belong in two categories: the first is
homes for the elderly that provide assisted living to seniors and the second is philanthropic societies, which primarily fight
against poverty. This paper argues that this sector is small in terms of membership, voluntary performance, beneficiaries,
and budget. Nonprofit organizations have succeeded in developing close relationships with local communities, as well as in
providing essential alleviation quickly and flexibly. On the other hand, organizations are very dependent on the state and
they keep beneficiaries away from decision making; moreover, their contribution to building social capital is trivial and
participation in policy-making minimal. The lack of collective representation prevents an open society and hinders communication
with government.

Attention to extreme forms of political violence in the social sciences has been episodic, and studies of different forms
of political violence have followed different approaches, with “breakdown” theories mostly used for the analysis of right-wing
radicalism, social movement theories sometimes adapted to research on left-wing radical groups, and area study specialists
focusing on ethnic and religious forms. Some of the studies on extreme forms of political violence that have emerged within
the social movement tradition have nevertheless been able to trace processes of conflict escalation through the detailed examination
of historical cases. This article assesses some of the knowledge acquired in previous research approaching issues of political
violence from the social movement perspective, as well as the challenges coming from new waves of debate on terrorist and
counterterrorist action and discourses. In doing this, the article reviews contributions coming from research looking at violence
as escalation of action repertoires within protest cycles; political opportunity and the state in escalation processes; resource
mobilization and violent organizations; narratives of violence; and militant constructions of external reality.

The proceeding of privatization is a tradeoff between short-term equality and long-term efficiency. Under the existing structures
of enterprise management and government powers, enterprise managers are likely to conspire with government officials to decide
the way of ownership transformation and share the benefits from there. The transformation of ownership will enhance the efficiency
of the company. Corruption indeed presses ahead the transformation of company ownership, whereas inequality is also aggravated
during the process. Case studies are provided to demonstrate the relationship between corruption and privatization in China.
Corruption and inequality are what the country pays for their dream of public ownership in 1950s. Equality, efficiency and
maintaining current social and political structure cannot be achieved simultaneously during enterprise restructuring.

This paper examines the structure and the main characteristics of the Chinese banking industry. In particular, the paper analyses
the problematic aspects of credit relations of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The SMEs are facing several problems in
accessing the bank loans market, dominated by the political and contractual weight of state-owned enterprises. However, some
recent reforms have improved the situation, a fundamental condition for additional positive results. Nevertheless, further
and more pervasive modernization efforts are needed to consolidate these results and to develop the relationships between
banks and SMEs.

We test the hypothesis that in an economic recovery, unionization negatively affects job creation. We examine state-level
job growth following two recent recessions, those with troughs in November 1982 and March 1991. In the five years following
the troughs, we assess whether variations across states in union membership and right-to-work laws affect the rate of job
growth. We find evidence that links union influence to slower job growth during an economic recovery, a finding consistent
with previous studies reporting that unions negatively affect average employment and employment growth.

This article examines the ways that endemic drug trafficking has affected local level politics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Drawing on ethnographic analysis of political exchanges in the 1998 national elections in three favelas (shantytowns), I argue
that drug trafficking has changed the practice of clientelism. Evidence and analysis in this paper will show that the persistence
of drug trafficking in the city has led to the emergence of a two-tiered clientelist system in which politicians make exchanges
with traffickers who then, in turn, provide some benefits to favela residents in return for their votes. This results in an
arrangement that provides votes to politicians and limited assistance to the poor but does little to build the legitimacy
of the political system.
