Ethnic and state sports in the context of the 2014 Sochi Olympics

Sports have long been an important point of expression in communal identity in the North Caucasus and recently came to serve as a forum for political dissent. This article examines the emergence and transformation of ethnic sport projects in the North Caucasus in connection with the 2014 Sochi Olympics. It charts the history and progress of two projects known as the Circassiada and the Caucasus Games and evaluates the debate of the sport-nation nexus in the North Caucasus. While the Circassiada and the Caucasus Games reflect the typical elite-driven narratives of border security and terrorism, they also highlight discussions over historical and cultural practices of nationhood and the boundaries of national identity.

美国影视媒体对"他者"的文化想象--美国影视中阿拉伯穆斯林形象塑造和再现的文化解读

全球化时代,文化的生产和再生产,文化的传播成了当代国际社会文化发展的主要趋势,不同文明之间的交流越来越频繁,而文化的自我表述和对他者的表述,成为不同文化之间彼此交流的关键性手段和形式.在当代全球化语境下,美国影视媒体中对伊斯兰和阿拉伯穆斯林形象的塑造和再现,蕴含着西方特别是美国的传统文化价值观.从美国的好莱坞大片、电视电影、儿童卡通片和动画片的制作和传播中,都不难发现美国影视媒体中包含的复杂而深层的多种权力关系,并且反映出全球化时代美国对中东的战略以及与伊斯兰世界和穆斯林的关系.通过对美国影视媒体对伊斯兰和穆斯林形象的塑造和表现过程的考察、分析,我们更能认识到不同文明间平等对话、相互理解的重要性和紧迫性.     

The power of Hyphen-Nationalism: Martin Scorsese's sojourn from Italian American to White-Ethnic American

Martin Scorsese is one of the most celebrated American filmmakers of the last 50 years. This essay looks at his public story in films, books, television, radio, journals, and newspapers. This story reflects the personal and artistic journey of Scorsese and the collective rendition of this journey by Scorsese, critics, journalists, and others. It shows the intersection of the personal life, public biography, creative work, and critical reception of a public intellectual negotiating his ethnic and racial-identity for six decades. Informed by work in Race and Ethnic Studies, Critical Whiteness Studies, and Critical Rhetoric Studies, this essay uses this story as a case study of the ideological power of white ethnic-identity and white racial-identity in the racial formation of post-civil rights America. I show how the public story of one of the most popular and critically acclaimed American artists over the last half-century transcribed the conversion of an ‘unmeltable’ Italian-American of the late 1960s Ethnic Revival to a White-Ethnic American of an end-of-the-century Hyphen-Nationalism. I demonstrate the power embedded in the institutional and cultural regime of Hyphen-Nationalism in the United States that acts to erase in personal memory, creative imagination, and art the power and legacy of white privilege.     

From Sex to Gender: The Feminisation of Migration and Labour-Market Insertion in Spain and Portugal

The aim of this article is to study the feminisation and masculinisation of migration and the insertion of the migrant population into the labour market in Spain and Portugal from the perspective of gender. Rather than focusing on the appearance of the demand for migrant labour in social reproduction work, we analyse the situation of both men and women in highly feminised and masculinised activities by studying the impact each exerts on the other, and the way in which this conditions the gender breakdown of the migrant population. We provide a historical view of the work of migrants in the care and cleaning sectors, comparing it with male migrant employment—mostly in construction—and analysing the gendered breakdown of migrant communities. We argue that, in contrast to the generally accepted discourse on the international scene, there has not been a steady evolution in the feminisation of migrant labour in Spain and Portugal. Instead, the presence of migrant women on the labour market fluctuates in accordance with a specific set of variables: welfare state and care regimes, immigration policies, historical links influencing the national origin of migrants, the housing situation, labour markets and the respective economic situations in the construction industry and in domestic and care work.

本文简明综述了新世纪的时代特点,指出作为发展中国家的中国及其少数民族之一的回族,在“千禧”、“西部大开发”的机遇和挑战中应有的清醒认识;进而对族人在中国的出现、群体形成被认同、及其文化、民族过程,作了粗线条地反观;在对回族研究的基础、条件、得失有所反思的基础上,提出了据回族发展、分布时空、族群与文化、文献积累诸特点,对回族的研究迫切需要加强对基础性社科之一的社会学及人类学的关注。以便准确认识回族的文化面貌,审时度势,与时俱进。     

Encounters between the ‘oppressed’ and the ‘oppressor’: rethinking Paulo Freire in anti-racist feminist education in Sweden

With the aim of rethinking Paulo Freire’s theory and its practices in race/ethnicity and education, this article uses intersectionality to deepen our understanding of differences among the oppressed and break the opposition between the oppressed and oppressor. Based on an ethnographic study carried out at a feminist adult educational institution in Sweden, the author examines the positionality of migrant students and feminist teachers and how they react to othering in the educational process and in Swedish society. The author also argues for the importance of intersectionality as a way to help both the conscientization of the oppressed and the radical task of the liberatory teachers. It is crucial to untangle gendered and sexualized racism, especially in specific contexts where race and gender intersect to construct a binary between a ‘superior us’ and a ‘barbaric Other.’ Conscientization and intersectionality are particularly useful for probing the complicated processes of othering and combating different forms of oppression and racism in an era of globalization in Western countries.

联合国教科文组织于1972年制定《保护世界文化和自然遗产公约》,把文化遗产和自然遗产纳入保护的范围;1989年又在《保护传统文化和民俗的建议》中,把民族传统和民俗文化纳入保护的范围。世界各国大都制定了保护民间文化遗产的法律规定,我国保护民族文化遗产的立法正在抓紧进行,开发和保护中华民族文化遗产资源具有十分重要的意义。必须加快对民间文学艺术等遗产的立法保护,积极贯彻落实文物保护法实施条例。

本文重点对人们司空见惯而又习焉不察的回汉亲密的民族关系的共因作论述和分析。全文依次从回汉血缘关系的共同性,回汉同仇敌忾、反侵略、反压迫的共同性,回汉价值取向和性格的共同性,回汉两族语言使用的共同性四个方面有理有据地证明回汉民族从相互接触到相互学习再到相互认同的过程,正是整个中华民族由分散走向团结再走向和谐凝聚的一个生动缩影。这对了解中华民族多元一体的整合过程,对当今构建和谐社会的和谐民族关系有重要的现实意义。
