Auntie Lan
TIANLIN 13 Village, where I live, sits in the southwest corner of Shanghai. It was built in the early 1980s. Whenever the people of the community have problems, they always turn to the woman in charge of the neighborhood committee for help. Most of the residents do not know her real name. They simply refer to her affectionately as their "Auntie Lan." I met Auntie Lan for the first time when I came to the neighborhood committee office to donate some clothes for the people of an area hit by an earthquake. The bright and tidy office, with its wall covered by all kinds of certificates of merit, impressed me deeply. Auntie Lan took the trouble to carefully count and record the donated money and clothes. Her neat penmanship on the notebooks was in harmony with the orderly office.  相似文献

I was born and brought up in Shanghai.Later, to follow my husband, I moved toBeijing. From the start I was impressed bythe courteous way the residents of theformer imperial city addressed people andtheir pleasing speech patterns, with curlingtongue to add an "er" pronunciation to manyof the Chinese words - so different from theflatter speech of Shanghai. Over the years inBeijing, I learned how to mimic the accentand found that the people of the two citiesare interestingly different in many ways. I was accustomed to sharing taxis when Iarrived, for in Shanghai, if you are going inthe same direction, strangers double up forcheaper fares. In the capital, however, it ishard to find someone willing to get in ifsomeone is already inside. One weekend,  相似文献

IT has been many years since the last time I visited West Lake in Hangzhou but it is still fresh in my menlory. It was in late spring, a cloudy and drizzly day. I did not feel like going at first, but later went along as two veteran editors insisted upon going. It didn't take long to get to the lake. This was my first time to appreciate the landscape of the region south of the Yangtze River at leisure. The air was damp and chilly as we strolled along the bank. Mist and fog hovered over the lake, and it was hard to distinguish the water from the sky. At a kiosk on the  相似文献

MY husband, Li Li, was among the first group of people to be laid off in China. It happened in 1987. The state-funded orchestra that he was working with had to reduce its size. Except for a few players of electronic instruments, all the members of the troupe were made redundant. Li Li, an oboe player, was one of them. Unemployment was still new to us at that time. THE King of Tibet, Songtsan Gambo, was wise and capable. In order to make Tibet prosperous, he planned to marry Princess Wencheng of the Imperial Palace, who was both beautiful and kindhearted. He sent the resourceful Gawa to the Emperor to propose. In order to choose a satisfactory son-in-law among such a great number of suitors, the Emperor asked messengers to take part in a wisdom competition. He first asked the messengers to match the mares with their foals in a large herd. Of all the messengers, Gawa was the only one who passed this test. First he separated the mares from their foals and locked them into two paddocks. After half a day, he released the foals and herded them in with the mares. The hungry foals immediately ran to their mothers to suckle their milk. In this way it was easy to see who belonged to whom. After this test of wit the Emperor gave the messengers two more puzzles. The first one was to ask them to eat an entire sheep in one day, tan its hide, drink a jug of alcohol and walk bac  相似文献
