Social problem solving is the cognitive-affective-behavioral process by which people attempt to resolve real-life problems
in a social environment, and is of key importance in the management of emotions and well-being. This paper reviews a series
of studies on social problem solving conducted by the authors. First, we developed and validated the Chinese version of the
Social Problem-Solving Inventory Revised (C-SPSI-R) which demonstrated very good psychometric properties. Second, we identified
the scope of stressful social situations faced by young adults and their self-efficacy in facing such situations (N = 179). Young adults were generally confident about their basic social skills but found it much more stressful to relate
to family members, handle conflicts, handle negative behaviors from others, self-disclose to others, and to express love.
Third, in two separate studies, we found that social problem solving was closely linked to measures of depression (n = 200), anxiety (n = 235), and family well-being (N = 1462). Measures of anxiety and depression were found to be significantly related to aspects of social problem solving in
expected directions and expected strength. In another study, higher parental social problem solving behavior and lower avoidance
behavior were found to be related to indicators of family well-being, including better overall family functioning, and fewer
parent–adolescent conflicts. 相似文献

Development Challenges of the "New Europe" 总被引:1,自引:2,他引:1
European nations are undergoing rapid and fundamental changesin response to social, political and economic eventsthat are
occurring both within and outside the region. These changes are far-reaching in scope and, ultimately, are expected to result
in a redefinitionof ``Europe' and what it means to be ``European.'Using the author's extensively pre-tested Index ofSocial Progress (ISP), the research reported in thispaper: 1) identifies the major changes in socialdevelopment that have taken place in
36 European nationssince 1970; 2) contrasts Europe's recent socialdevelopment trends with those of other major world regions(including
Asia, Africa, Latin and North America, andOceania); 3) using aggregate scores on the WeightedIndex of Social Progress (WISP), identifies Europe's``social leaders' (SLs), ``middle performing countries'(MPCs), identifies Europe's ``social
leaders' (SLs),``middle performing countries' (MPCs), and ``sociallyleast developing countries' (SLDCs); 4) identifies
themajor development challenges confronting Europe at theoutset of a new decade; and 5) provides baseline dataagainst which
future developments in the region maybe assessed. 相似文献

This study examined the relationship between hope as disposition, adaptation to old age, and individual-demographic factors.
One hundred and fifty older adults, aged 60–93 years old, completed the Adult Dispositional Hope Scale developed by Snyder
et al. [1991, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 60, pp. 570–585], and the Adaptation to Old Age Questionnaire
developed by Efklides et al. [2003, European Psychologist, 8, pp. 178–191]. Factor analyses revealed 2 factors for hope, “Pathways
Thought” and “Agency Thinking”, and 4 factors for adaptation to old age, “Health Comparison”, “General Adaptation/Self-Efficacy”,
“Self-Control”, and “Generativity”. Regression analyses showed that hope as pathways thought predicted all factors of adaptation,
whereas hope as agency thinking predicted only “General Adaptation/Self-Efficacy” and “Self-Control”. There were also some
effects of gender, education, marital status, place of residence, and health status on specific aspects of adaptation to old
age. 相似文献

In May 2004, the Australian government announced a “Baby Bonus” policy, paying women an initial A$3,000 per new child. We
use household panel data from the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia Survey (N = 14,932) and a simultaneous equations approach to analyze the effects of this bonus on fertility intentions and ultimately
births. The results indicate that opportunity costs influence intentions and births in predictable ways. Fertility intentions
rose after the announcement of the Baby Bonus, and the birth rate is estimated to have risen modestly as a result. The marginal
cost to the government for an additional birth is estimated to be at least A$3,000 per new child. We

This paper presents a study of the relationship between the psychological well-being of Spanish adolescents from 12 to 16 years
old and the values they aspire to for the future (N = 1,618). Adolescents’ well-being is explored through (a) their satisfaction with 19 specific life domains, (b) the Personal
Well-Being Index (Cummins, Social Indicators Research, 43, 307−334, 1998) and (c) an item on overall satisfaction with life. The values they aspire to are explored by means of a list
of 23 personal qualities or values. Satisfaction domains and values aspired to have been grouped into dimensions using principal
component analysis (PCA). Boys scored significantly higher on the materialistic values dimension and the capacities and knowledge
related values dimension, while girls scored higher on the interpersonal relationship related values dimension. The youngest
adolescents scored higher on materialistic values, while the oldest scored higher on interpersonal relationships related values.
Such results are similar to those obtained in a previous study, using a shorter version of the lists of satisfaction domains
and of values aspired to and a sample of 8,995 adolescents and 4,381 of their parents from five different countries. In both
studies results suggest that values aspired to can be considered a well-being related construct. However, an important change
appears in the latest Spanish sample: Family values no longer fit with the interpersonal relationships related values dimension
in the PCA, and now function as a separate value dimension which shows no correlation with overall life satisfaction, the
PWI, or life satisfaction domains with the exception of family satisfaction. Interestingly, family values have also changed
their loading dimension in the PCA developed with the answers from a sample of parents about the values they aspire to for
their own child’s future (N = 723). Parents’ responses were compared with those of their own child, with concordances observed in about half of the families,
low discrepancies in about one third and high or very high discrepancies in about 20%. Although the results of this study
have their limitations, they suggest support for the hypothesis that important changes in values aspired to may be taking
place over a short period of time, consistent with the findings of changes in values in several countries (Inglehart, Modernization and postmodernization. Cultural, economic and political change in 43 societies, Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1997), but apparently with no outstanding impact on adolescents’ well-being. 相似文献

This paper reviews the medical (salutogenic) effect of interventions that aim to improve quality of life. Review of studies
where the global quality of life in chronically ill patients was improved independently of subjective and objective factors
(like physical and mental health, yearly income, education, social network, self-esteem, sexual ability and problems or work).
The methods used were subtypes of integrative medicine (non-drug CAM) like mind body medicine, body psychotherapy, clinical
holistic medicine, consciousness-based medicine and sexology. In about 20 papers on QOL as medicine, in cancer, coronary heart
disease, chronic pain, mental illness, sexual dysfunction, low self-esteem, low working ability and poor QOL, the most successful
intervention strategy seems to be to create a maternal, infantile bonding induced by a combination of conversation therapy
and bodywork. The papers examined the treatments of over 2,000 chronically ill or dysfunctional patients and more than 20
different types of health problems. Global QOL measured by SEQOL, QOL5, QOL1, self-rated physical health, self-rated mental health, self-rated sexual functioning,
anorgasmia, genital pain, self-rated working ability, self-rated relation to self, well-being, life-satisfaction, happiness,
fulfillment of needs, experience of temporal and spatial domains, expression of life’s potentials, and objective functioning.
We found “QOL as medicine” able in the treatment of physical disorders and illnesses including chronic pain (Number Needed
to Treat (NNT) = 1–3, Number Needed to Harm (NNH) > 500), in mental illness (NNT = 1–3, NNH > 500), in sexual dysfunctions
(NNT = 1–2, NNH > 1,000), self-rated low working ability (NNT = 2, NNH > 500), and self-rated low QOL (NNT = 2, NNH > 2,000).
We found that QOL improving interventions helped or cured 30–90% of the patients, typically within one year, independent of
the type of health problem. “QOL as medicine” seems to be able in improving chronic mental, somatic and sexual health issues
without side effects. 相似文献

How Social Relations and Structures can Produce Happiness and Unhappiness: An International Comparative Analysis 总被引:5,自引:2,他引:5
In this paper, subjective well being, as measured by survey questions on happiness and life satisfaction, is investigated
from a sociological-comparative point of view. The central thesis is that happiness and satisfaction must be understood as
the outcome of an interaction process between individual characteristics and aspirations on the one side, and social relations
and macrosocial structures on the other side. A distinction is made between life satisfaction and happiness; the former is
more seen as the outcome of an evaluation process including material and social aspirations and achievements, the latter as
an outcome of positive experiences, particularly close personal relationships. The focus of this paper is on micro- and macrosocial
conditions favouring or inhibiting the emergence of happiness and satisfaction. It is hypothesized that dense and good basic
social relations, occupational involvement and success, sociocultural (religious and altruistic) orientations and participation
are conducive to happiness and life satisfaction; the same should be true at the macrolevel for economic prosperity, relatively
equal social structures, a well-established welfare state and political democracy. The latter conditions, however, should
be more important for life satisfaction than for happiness. A comparative, multilevel regression analysis of happiness in
41 nations around the world is carried out (using the World Value Survey 1995–1997). Both our general assumption and most of the specific hypotheses could be confirmed. It turned very clearly that
“happiness” and “life satisfaction” are two different concepts. It could be shown that microsocial embedding and sociocultural
integration of a person are highly relevant for happiness. However, contrary to earlier studies, we find that macrosocial
factors like the economic wealth of nation, the distribution of income, the extent of the welfare state and political freedom
are also relevant, particularly for satisfaction. What counts most is the ability to cope with life, including subjective
health and financial satisfaction, close social relations, and the economic perspectives for improvement in the future, both
at the level of the individual and at that of the society. These abilities are certainly improved by favourable macrosocial
conditions and institutions, such as a more equal income distribution, political democracy and a welfare state. 相似文献

The Well-Being of 12 - to 16-Year-Old Adolescents and their Parents: Results from 1999 to 2003 Spanish Samples 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Ferran Casas Cristina Figuer Mònica González Sara Malo Carles Alsinet Sandra Subarroca 《Social indicators research》2007,83(1):87-115
This study adopts satisfaction with life as a whole and satisfaction with specific life domains as indicators to analyse the
relationships between the well-being of 12 to 16-year-old adolescents and some related constructs such as self-esteem, perceived
control and perceived social support. Well-being indicators from a 2003 Spanish sample using an 11-point scale (N = 1,634) are compared with an equivalent 1999 Spanish sample using a 5-point scale (N = 1,618). The different results obtained from the 2003 sample with a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) using a shorter and
a longer list of life domains are also discussed. A sub-sample of the adolescents’ results from the 2003 sample are compared
with their parents’ answers, using the same well-being indicators. Using a list of 8 life domains, and despite the change
of scale used, overall results show no relevant changes in adolescents’ satisfaction with life domains between 1999 and 2003
in Spain and are in agreement with normative data expected from western societies [Cummins: 1998, Social Indicators Research
43, pp. 307–334; Cummins et al.: 2001, Australian Unity Well-being Index (Australian Centre on Quality of Life, Deakin University,
Melbourne)]. Adolescents’ overall life satisfaction has been shown to correlate consistently with the other well-being related
constructs. However, it clearly decreases with age over the period studied. The results also show that increasing the list
of life domains has a major impact on the structure of the results obtained. When we compare results from parents with those
from their own child, outstanding differences in well-being appear between generations: few domain satisfaction dimensions
show significant correlation between parents and children and more than 20% of the population studied shows high discrepancies
in the answers in four domains. 相似文献

As the existing scales to measure loneliness are almost all Western and there is no single scale developed cross-culturally
for this purpose, this study is designed to develop a reliable and valid scale to measure the experience of loneliness of
individuals from individualistic or collectivistic cultures. There are three samples for this study with a total of 495 male
and female international (n = 202) and local (n = 293) participants (Age range 19–60 years). An initial pool of 70 item scale was administered to a sample of 202 participants
(20–60 years old) from 41 countries of the world with collectivistic and individualistic cultures and the data was subjected
to factor analysis using principal component extraction. Evidence shows a unidimensional factor loading. The extracted items
were subjected to reliability test and 25 items were obtained for the final scale of the UP Loneliness Assessment Scale (UPLAS)
with a Cronbach alpha of .93. Further analyses show the following findings: UPLAS has a significant correlation with R-UCLA
Loneliness Scale providing evidence for its moderate concurrent validity; there is a significant and inverse relationship
between the measures of UPLAS and Subjective Happiness Scale establishing its higher discriminant validity; UPLAS scores are
significantly correlated with the measures of negative self-perceptions, depression, and several emotional states associated
to loneliness and thus establishing a higher convergent validity. The designing of the UP Loneliness Assessment Scale as a
cross-cultural measurement tool may contribute to more research interests in the domain of “negative perceptions” as the most
contributing factor to loneliness across cultures. 相似文献

Theorizing indicators 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Ivar Frønes 《Social indicators research》2007,83(1):5-23
Policymakers and social theorists have increasingly come to rely on social indicators to guide their decisions and theories.
Social indicators are also useful in bridging theory and empirical research as well as the traditional gap between policymaking
and social theory. The concept of social indicators covers interpretation of cultural signs, simple statistical measures,
and complex statistical indexes related to sets of domains. The article views the development of child well-being indicators
as central not only in the social welfare field, but as an indicator of future societal conditions, given that children’s
lives are especially sensitive to social change. The paper addresses the development of indicators of children’s well-being,
arguing that the expansion of the field, the complexity of new domains and indicators, and the position of children as “being”
and “becoming”, they are citizens of the present as well as being socialized for the future, illustrates that the next crucial
step for the field is to further elaborate theories and models. 相似文献

This paper shows that financial intermediation can influence fertility and labor allocation decisions by raising market wages.
The increase in wages induces some households to abandon “traditional” labor intensive methods of production managed at the
household level and supply labor to “modern” sector firms. Since it is optimal for households in the modern sector to have
fewer children, the labor allocation decision leads to lower national fertility. A panel VAR using financial intermediation,
fertility and industrial employment share data in 87 countries is estimated. The empirical results show that the data are
consistent with the theoretical predictions.

There is an ambiguity in Amartya Sen’s capability approach as to what constitutes an individual’s resources, conversion factors
and valuable functionings. What we here call the “circularity problem” points to the fact that all three concepts seem to
be mutually endogenous and interdependent. To econometrically account for this entanglement we suggest a panel vector autoregression
approach. We analyze the intertemporal interplay of the above factors over a time horizon of 15 years using the BHPS data
set for Great Britain, measuring individual well-being in functionings space with a set of basic functionings, comprising
“being happy”, “being healthy”, “being nourished”, “moving about freely”, “being well-sheltered” and “having satisfying social
relations”. We find that there are indeed functionings that are resources for many other functionings (viz. “being happy”)
while other functionings (“being well-sheltered” and “having satisfying social relations”) are by and large independent, thus
shedding light on a facet of the capability approach that has been neglected so far. 相似文献

World social development has arrived at a critical turning point. Economically advanced nations have made significant progress
toward meeting the basic needs of their populations; however, the majority of developing countries have not. Problems of rapid
population growth, failing economies, famine, environmental devastation, majority-minority group conflicts, increasing militarization,
among others, are pushing many developing nations toward the brink of social chaos. This paper focuses on worldwide development
trends for the 40-year period 1970–2009. Particular attention is given to the disparities in development that exist between
the world’s “rich” and “poor” countries as well as the global forces that sustain these disparities. The paper also discusses
more recent positive trends occurring within the world’s “socially least developed countries” (SLDCs), especially those located
in Africa and Asia, in reducing poverty and in promoting improved quality of life for increasing numbers of their populations. 相似文献

Gratitude and Adolescent Athletes’ Well-Being 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Two cross-sectional studies were conducted to examine the relationships between gratitude and athletes’ well-being. Study
1 examines the relationship between dispositional gratitude and well-being, while Study 2 investigates the relationship between
sport-domain gratitude and well-being. In Study 1, 169 Taiwanese senior high school athletes (M = 16.43, SD = 0.7 years) were
administered the Gratitude Questionnaire (GQ; McCullough et al. 2002, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 82(1), 112–127), Team Satisfaction Scale (Walling et al. 1993, Journal of Sport & Exercise Psychology, 15, 172–183), Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS; Diener et al. 1985, Journal of Personality Assessment, 49, 71–75), and the Athlete Burnout Questionnaire (ABQ; Raedeke and Smith, 2001, Journal of Sport & Exercise Psychology, 23(4), 281–306). In Study 2, a separate sample of 265 adolescent athletes (M = 16.47 years, SD = 0.7) were administered the
modified Sport-domain GQ, Team Satisfaction Scale, and ABQ. Study 1 results showed that dispositional gratitude positively
predicts team satisfaction and life satisfaction, and negatively predicts athlete burnout. Findings from Study 2 revealed
that sport-domain gratitude positively predicts team satisfaction and negatively predicts athlete burnout. A stronger gratitude
and well-being relationship was observed in Study 2. This research provides the initial verification that gratitude and adolescent
athletes’ well-being are related. Possible mechanism of this relation, limitations, and practical implications are discussed. 相似文献

This study explores the meaning of quality of life (QOL) in China from the perspective of social representations. The data
were collected by open-ended individual interviews with 16 ordinary Chinese people. The study shows that social thinking about
QOL in Chinese society is activated in five critical domains of life: health, family, work, social relations and the natural
environment. Meanwhile, “having” and “being”, the two antinomic, yet dialogical interdependent, interpretive repertoires,
have an overarching generative and normative power over the discourse about QOL. They permeate and underpin the different
domains of life. Dominated by an “economic logic”, the “having” repertoire constructs these life domains through a set of
economic consequences and posits them as resources leading to material possessions. While dominated by an “existential logic”,
the “being” repertoire confesses existential meanings to the same life domains, and emphasises the joy derived from them.
Thereby, it infers that QOL as a social representation is generated from, and organised around, a central thema of “having”
and “being”. 相似文献

Background Mental health problems are a major public health issue worldwide. The aim of this study was to assess the relative importance
of socio-demographic characteristics associated with different domains of psychological distress in Finland. Methods Data source was a nationwide survey “Health Behaviour and Health among the Finnish Adult Population” (AVTK), from years 2002
to 2003 (N = 5425; response rate 66%). Psychological distress was measured by self-reported questions of general mental health (MHI-5),
depression, insomnia and stress. Socio-demographic factors included education, employment status, partnership and children
living in the household. Main analyses were conducted by multivariate logistic regression. Results Education, employment and partnership were associated with most of the psychological distress outcomes. Respondents with a
lower educational level had poor mental health in both genders but less insomnia and stress in men. Those with an intermediate
education had the least stress in women. The unemployed and retired were at a higher risk for poor mental health and depression.
Moreover, employment status was associated with insomnia and stress in men. Respondents not having a partner showed a higher
risk of psychological distress according to all measures. Not having children living in the household was associated with
insomnia in women and with less stress in men. Conclusions Socio-demographic factors, such as having a partner and employment status, are associated with several measures of psychological
distress indicating the importance of social and economic factors to psychological well-being. The association of education
and of having children living at home varies by the domain of psychological distress measure. 相似文献

This study reviews the sustainable urban design concept and identifies critical factors for enhancing social sustainability
of urban renewal projects. Through a questionnaire survey carried out in Hong Kong, the opinions of architects, planners,
property development managers, and local citizens were sought and evaluated. The results derived from factor analysis indicated
that certain design features should be incorporated for achieving social sustainability. “Satisfaction of Welfare Requirements”,
“Conservation of Resources & the Surroundings”, “Creation of Harmonious Living Environment”, “Provisions Facilitating Daily
Life Operations”, “Form of Development” and “Availability of Open Spaces” were believed to be the significant underlying factors
for enhancing social sustainability of local urban renewal projects.

This paper is a sequel to Sirgy et al. (Social Ind. Res. 68(3) (2004) 251), “The Impact of Globalization on a Country’s Quality of Life: Toward an Integrated Model” published in
Social Indicators Research. That paper conceptualized globalization in terms of the free flow of four major components: (1) goods and services, (2) people,
(3) capital, and (4) information. The current paper focuses on the free flow of goods and services, one of the four major
components of globalization. Specifically, we (1) articulate the trade globalization construct, (2) show the complex mediating
effects between trade globalization and QOL, and (3) describe under what conditions these positive vs. negative QOL effects are likely to occur. We develop a set of theoretical propositions to capture these
mediating and moderating effects. Based on the theoretical model, we suggest the following public policy recommendations:
(1) Encourage exporting firms not to outsource jobs. (2) Encourage firms to export more products in ways that can enhance
their production efficiency. (3) Discourage firms from exporting culturally sensitive (and possibly offensive) products to
culturally distant countries. (4) Encourage firms to export more products with potential for technology transfer. (5) Encourage
firms in industries with a significant comparative advantage to increase exports. (6) Encourage imports of products that do
not compete with high employment domestic industries where workers cannot easily transition to more productive employment.
(7) Impose trade barriers as short-term solution to help␣threatened industries while helping those industries retool to become
more competitive. (8)␣Assist displaced workers by re-training them to shift to industries with comparative advantage. 相似文献

Child poverty has been widely discussed in Germany since the publication of the third official Poverty and Wealth Report of
the German government in 2008 which—inter alia—focused on the situation of children and families. However, child poverty is
not only caused by low household incomes and impacts of child poverty are not only restricted to financial consequences. The
capability approach takes into account this multidimensionality of well-being and poverty of children. It conceptualizes human
well-being as not only depending on financial means but also gives the same importance to the personal and social conversion
factors which determine how far financial means can be converted into personal well-being. Before 2008 the capability approach
had only been applied to the well-being of adults in Germany, but not specifically to the well-being of children. However,
there are several reasons why a capability analysis for children will differ from a capability analysis for adults. Adults’
capability sets comprise dimensions that are less relevant for small children while other valuable capabilities have to be
added. Furthermore the capability set depends to a large extent on the age of the child. The paper focuses on a multidimensional
poverty analysis in the capability perspective of 5–6 years old children. In the domains of “Education/Leisure”, “Health”,
“Social Participation” and “Income” child poverty is measured by predefined indicators. The relationship to the social and
personal conversion factors of the caretakers is then evaluated. Additionally, a multidimensional poverty measure is analyzed. 相似文献
