In Markov chain Monte Carlo analysis, rapid convergence of the chain to its target distribution is crucial. A chain that converges geometrically quickly is geometrically ergodic. We explore geometric ergodicity for two-component Gibbs samplers (GS) that, under a chosen scanning strategy, evolve through one-at-a-time component-wise updates. We consider three such strategies: composition, random sequence, and random scans. We show that if any one of these scans produces a geometrically ergodic GS, so too do the others. Further, we provide a simple set of sufficient conditions for the geometric ergodicity of the GS. We illustrate our results using two examples.  相似文献

The particle Gibbs sampler is a systematic way of using a particle filter within Markov chain Monte Carlo. This results in an off‐the‐shelf Markov kernel on the space of state trajectories, which can be used to simulate from the full joint smoothing distribution for a state space model in a Markov chain Monte Carlo scheme. We show that the particle Gibbs Markov kernel is uniformly ergodic under rather general assumptions, which we will carefully review and discuss. In particular, we provide an explicit rate of convergence, which reveals that (i) for fixed number of data points, the convergence rate can be made arbitrarily good by increasing the number of particles and (ii) under general mixing assumptions, the convergence rate can be kept constant by increasing the number of particles superlinearly with the number of observations. We illustrate the applicability of our result by studying in detail a common stochastic volatility model with a non‐compact state space.  相似文献

This article considers Bayesian variable selection problems for binary responses via stochastic search variable selection and Bayesian Lasso. To avoid matrix inversion in the corresponding Markov chain Monte Carlo implementations, the componentwise Gibbs sampler (CGS) idea is adopted. Moreover, we also propose automatic hyperparameter tuning rules for the proposed approaches. Simulation studies and a real example are used to demonstrate the performances of the proposed approaches. These results show that CGS approaches do not only have good performances in variable selection but also have the lower batch mean standard error values than those of original methods, especially for large number of covariates.  相似文献

Markov chain Monte Carlo methods, in particular, the Gibbs sampler, are widely used algorithms both in application and theoretical works in the classical and Bayesian paradigms. However, these algorithms are often computer intensive. Samawi et al. [Steady-state ranked Gibbs sampler. J. Stat. Comput. Simul. 2012;82(8), 1223–1238. doi:10.1080/00949655.2011.575378] demonstrate through theory and simulation that the dependent steady-state Gibbs sampler is more efficient and accurate in model parameter estimation than the original Gibbs sampler. This paper proposes the independent steady-state Gibbs sampler (ISSGS) approach to improve the original Gibbs sampler in multidimensional problems. It is demonstrated that ISSGS provides accuracy with unbiased estimation and improves the performance and convergence of the Gibbs sampler in multidimensional problems.  相似文献

The authors describe Bayesian estimation for the parameters of the bivariate gamma distribution due to Kibble (1941). The density of this distribution can be written as a mixture, which allows for a simple data augmentation scheme. The authors propose a Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm to facilitate estimation. They show that the resulting chain is geometrically ergodic, and thus a regenerative sampling procedure is applicable, which allows for estimation of the standard errors of the ergodic means. They develop Bayesian hypothesis testing procedures to test both the dependence hypothesis of the two variables and the hypothesis of equal means. They also propose a reversible jump Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm to carry out the model selection problem. Finally, they use sets of real and simulated data to illustrate their methodology.  相似文献

Bayesian inference for the multinomial probit model, using the Gibbs sampler with data augmentation, has been recently considered by some authors. The present paper introduces a modification of the sampling technique, by defining a hybrid Markov chain in which, after each Gibbs sampling cycle, a Metropolis step is carried out along a direction of constant likelihood. Examples with simulated data sets motivate and illustrate the new technique. A proof of the ergodicity of the hybrid Markov chain is also given.  相似文献

Combining the multivariate probit models with the multivariate partially linear single-index models, we propose new semiparametric latent variable models for multivariate ordinal response data. Based on the reversible jump Markov chain Monte Carlo technique, we develop a fully Bayesian method with free-knot splines to analyse the proposed models. To address the problem that the ordinary Gibbs sampler usually converges slowly, we make use of the partial-collapse and parameter-expansion techniques in our algorithm. The proposed methodology are demonstrated by simulated and real data examples.  相似文献

Finite mixture of regression (FMR) models are aimed at characterizing subpopulation heterogeneity stemming from different sets of covariates that impact different groups in a population. We address the contemporary problem of simultaneously conducting covariate selection and determining the number of mixture components from a Bayesian perspective that can incorporate prior information. We propose a Gibbs sampling algorithm with reversible jump Markov chain Monte Carlo implementation to accomplish concurrent covariate selection and mixture component determination in FMR models. Our Bayesian approach contains innovative features compared to previously developed reversible jump algorithms. In addition, we introduce component-adaptive weighted g priors for regression coefficients, and illustrate their improved performance in covariate selection. Numerical studies show that the Gibbs sampler with reversible jump implementation performs well, and that the proposed weighted priors can be superior to non-adaptive unweighted priors.  相似文献

We demonstrate the use of auxiliary (or latent) variables for sampling non-standard densities which arise in the context of the Bayesian analysis of non-conjugate and hierarchical models by using a Gibbs sampler. Their strategic use can result in a Gibbs sampler having easily sampled full conditionals. We propose such a procedure to simplify or speed up the Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm. The strength of this approach lies in its generality and its ease of implementation. The aim of the paper, therefore, is to provide an alternative sampling algorithm to rejection-based methods and other sampling approaches such as the Metropolis–Hastings algorithm.  相似文献

We develop Bayesian procedures to make inference about parameters of a statistical design with autocorrelated error terms. Modelling treatment effects can be complex in the presence of other factors such as time; for example in longitudinal data. In this paper, Markov chain Monte Carlo methods (MCMC), the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm and Gibbs sampler are used to facilitate the Bayesian analysis of real life data when the error structure can be expressed as an autoregressive model of order p. We illustrate our analysis with real data.  相似文献

Generalized Gibbs samplers simulate from any direction, not necessarily limited to the coordinate directions of the parameters of the objective function. We study how to optimally choose such directions in a random scan Gibbs sampler setting. We consider that optimal directions will be those that minimize the Kullback–Leibler divergence of two Markov chain Monte Carlo steps. Two distributions over direction are proposed for the multivariate Normal objective function. The resulting algorithms are used to simulate from a truncated multivariate Normal distribution, and the performance of our algorithms is compared with the performance of two algorithms based on the Gibbs sampler.  相似文献

One way that has been used for identifying and estimating threshold autoregressive (TAR) models for nonlinear time series follows the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) approach via the Gibbs sampler. This route has major computational difficulties, specifically, in getting convergence to the parameter distributions. In this article, a new procedure for identifying a TAR model and for estimating its parameters is developed by following the reversible jump MCMC procedure. It is found that the proposed procedure conveys a Markov chain with convergence properties.  相似文献

In this article we investigate the relationship between the EM algorithm and the Gibbs sampler. We show that the approximate rate of convergence of the Gibbs sampler by Gaussian approximation is equal to that of the corresponding EM-type algorithm. This helps in implementing either of the algorithms as improvement strategies for one algorithm can be directly transported to the other. In particular, by running the EM algorithm we know approximately how many iterations are needed for convergence of the Gibbs sampler. We also obtain a result that under certain conditions, the EM algorithm used for finding the maximum likelihood estimates can be slower to converge than the corresponding Gibbs sampler for Bayesian inference. We illustrate our results in a number of realistic examples all based on the generalized linear mixed models.  相似文献

This paper presents a Bayesian analysis of partially linear additive models for quantile regression. We develop a semiparametric Bayesian approach to quantile regression models using a spectral representation of the nonparametric regression functions and the Dirichlet process (DP) mixture for error distribution. We also consider Bayesian variable selection procedures for both parametric and nonparametric components in a partially linear additive model structure based on the Bayesian shrinkage priors via a stochastic search algorithm. Based on the proposed Bayesian semiparametric additive quantile regression model referred to as BSAQ, the Bayesian inference is considered for estimation and model selection. For the posterior computation, we design a simple and efficient Gibbs sampler based on a location-scale mixture of exponential and normal distributions for an asymmetric Laplace distribution, which facilitates the commonly used collapsed Gibbs sampling algorithms for the DP mixture models. Additionally, we discuss the asymptotic property of the sempiparametric quantile regression model in terms of consistency of posterior distribution. Simulation studies and real data application examples illustrate the proposed method and compare it with Bayesian quantile regression methods in the literature.  相似文献

In complex models like hidden Markov chains, the convergence of the MCMC algorithms used to approximate the posterior distribution and the Bayes estimates of the parameters of interest must be controlled in a robust manner. We propose in this paper a series of online controls, which rely on classical non-parametric tests, to evaluate independence from the start-up distribution, stability of the Markov chain, and asymptotic normality. These tests lead to graphical control spreadsheets which arepresentedin the set-up of normalmixture hidden Markov chains to compare the full Gibbs sampler with an aggregated Gibbs sampler based on the forward – backward formulas.  相似文献

In epidemiological studies where subjects are seen periodically on follow-up visits, interval-censored data occur naturally. The exact time the change of state (such as HIV seroconversion) occurs is not known exactly, only that it occurred within some time interval. In multi-stage sampling or partner tracing studies, individuals are grouped into smaller subgroups. Individuals within a subgroup share an unobservable specific frailty which induces correlation within the subgroup. In this paper, we consider a Bayesian model for analysing correlated interval-censored data. Parameters are estimated using the Markov chain Monte Carlo methods, specifically the Gibbs sampler.  相似文献

This article presents a novel Bayesian analysis for linear mixed-effects models. The analysis is based on the method of partial collapsing that allows some components to be partially collapsed out of a model. The resulting partially collapsed Gibbs (PCG) sampler constructed to fit linear mixed-effects models is expected to exhibit much better convergence properties than the corresponding Gibbs sampler. In order to construct the PCG sampler without complicating component updates, we consider the reparameterization of model components by expressing a between-group variance in terms of a within-group variance in a linear mixed-effects model. The proposed method of partial collapsing with reparameterization is applied to the Merton’s jump diffusion model as well as general linear mixed-effects models with proper prior distributions and illustrated using simulated data and longitudinal data on sleep deprivation.  相似文献

We consider Bayesian analysis of threshold autoregressive moving average model with exogenous inputs (TARMAX). In order to obtain the desired marginal posterior distributions of all parameters including the threshold value of the two-regime TARMAX model, we use two different Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods to apply Gibbs sampler with Metropolis-Hastings algorithm. The first one is used to obtain iterative least squares estimates of the parameters. The second one includes two MCMC stages for estimate the desired marginal posterior distributions and the parameters. Simulation experiments and a real data example show support to our approaches.  相似文献

This article proposes an exact estimation of demand functions under block-rate pricing by focusing on increasing block-rate pricing. This is the first study that explicitly considers the separability condition which has been ignored in previous literature. Under this pricing structure, the price changes when consumption exceeds a certain threshold and the consumer faces a utility maximization problem subject to a piecewise-linear budget constraint. Solving this maximization problem leads to a statistical model in which model parameters are strongly restricted by the separability condition. In this article, by taking a hierarchical Bayesian approach, we implement a Markov chain Monte Carlo simulation to properly estimate the demand function. We find, however, that the convergence of the distribution of simulated samples to the posterior distribution is slow, requiring an additional scale transformation step for parameters to the Gibbs sampler. These proposed methods are then applied to estimate the Japanese residential water demand function.  相似文献

When Gaussian errors are inappropriate in a multivariate linear regression setting, it is often assumed that the errors are iid from a distribution that is a scale mixture of multivariate normals. Combining this robust regression model with a default prior on the unknown parameters results in a highly intractable posterior density. Fortunately, there is a simple data augmentation (DA) algorithm and a corresponding Haar PX‐DA algorithm that can be used to explore this posterior. This paper provides conditions (on the mixing density) for geometric ergodicity of the Markov chains underlying these Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithms. Letting d denote the dimension of the response, the main result shows that the DA and Haar PX‐DA Markov chains are geometrically ergodic whenever the mixing density is generalized inverse Gaussian, log‐normal, inverted Gamma (with shape parameter larger than d /2) or Fréchet (with shape parameter larger than d /2). The results also apply to certain subsets of the Gamma, F and Weibull families.  相似文献
