The case-crossover design has been used by many researchers to study the transient effect of an exposure on the risk of a rare outcome. In a case-crossover design, only cases are sampled and each case will act as his/her own control. The time of failure acts as the case and non failure times act as the controls. Case-crossover designs have frequently been used to study the effect of environmental exposures on rare diseases or mortality. Time trends and seasonal confounding may be present in environmental studies and thus need to be controlled for by the sampling design. Several sampling methods are available for this purpose. In time-stratified sampling, disjoint strata of equal size are formed and the control times within the case stratum are used for comparison. The random semi-symmetric sampling design randomly selects a control time for comparison from two possible control times. The fixed semi-symmetric sampling design is a modified version of the random semi-symmetric sampling design that removes the random selection. Simulations show that the fixed semi-symmetric sampling design improves the variance of the random semi-symmetric sampling estimator by at least 35% for the exposures we studied. We derive expressions for the asymptotic variance of risk estimators for these designs, and show, that while the designs are not theoretically equivalent, in many realistic situations, the random semi-symmetric sampling design has similar efficiency to a time-stratified sampling design of size two and the fixed semi-symmetric sampling design has similar efficiency to a time-stratified sampling design of size three.  相似文献

We provide a method for finding the optimal double sampling plan for estimating the mean value of a continuous outcome. It is assumed that the fallible and true outcome data are related by a multivariate linear regression model where only some of the explanatory variables are sampled. Conditions under which double sampling is preferred over standard sampling plans are determined. An application of the method to a well-known data set on air pollution is presented.  相似文献

Three sampling designs are considered for estimating the sum of k population means by the sum of the corresponding sample means. These are (a) the optimal design; (b) equal sample sizes from all populations; and (c) sample sizes that render equal variances to all sample means. Designs (b) and (c) are equally inefficient, and may yield a variance up to k times as large as that of (a). Similar results are true when the cost of sampling is introduced, and they depend on the population sampled.  相似文献

While well chosen sampling schemes may substantially increase efficiency of observational studies, some sampling schemes may instead decrease efficiency. Rules of thumb how to choose sampling schemes are only available for some special cases. In this paper we provide tools to compare efficiencies, and cost adjusted efficiencies, of different sampling schemes, in order to facilitate this choice. The method can be used for both categorical and continuous outcome variables. Some examples are presented, focusing on data from ascertainment sampling schemes. A Monte Carlo method is used to overcome computational issues wherever needed. The results are illustrated in graphs.  相似文献

Optimal design methods have been proposed to determine the best sampling times when sparse blood sampling is required in clinical pharmacokinetic studies. However, the optimal blood sampling time points may not be feasible in clinical practice. Sampling windows, a time interval for blood sample collection, have been proposed to provide flexibility in blood sampling times while preserving efficient parameter estimation. Because of the complexity of the population pharmacokinetic models, which are generally nonlinear mixed effects models, there is no analytical solution available to determine sampling windows. We propose a method for determination of sampling windows based on MCMC sampling techniques. The proposed method attains a stationary distribution rapidly and provides time-sensitive windows around the optimal design points. The proposed method is applicable to determine sampling windows for any nonlinear mixed effects model although our work focuses on an application to population pharmacokinetic models.  相似文献

Pharmacokinetic studies are commonly performed using the two-stage approach. The first stage involves estimation of pharmacokinetic parameters such as the area under the concentration versus time curve (AUC) for each analysis subject separately, and the second stage uses the individual parameter estimates for statistical inference. This two-stage approach is not applicable in sparse sampling situations where only one sample is available per analysis subject similar to that in non-clinical in vivo studies. In a serial sampling design, only one sample is taken from each analysis subject. A simulation study was carried out to assess coverage, power and type I error of seven methods to construct two-sided 90% confidence intervals for ratios of two AUCs assessed in a serial sampling design, which can be used to assess bioequivalence in this parameter.  相似文献

In some situations an experimenter may desire to have equally spaced design points. Three methods of obtaining such points on the interval [—1,1]—namely systematic random sampling, centrally located systematic sampling, and a purposive systematic sampling method which includes the endpoints - 1 and 1 as two of the design points-are evaluated under the D-optimal and G-optimal criteria. These methods are also compared to the optimal designs in polynomial regression and to the limiting designs of Kiefer and Studden (1976).  相似文献

Abstract.  This paper describes the use of model-based geostatistics for choosing the set of sampling locations, collectively called the design, to be used in a geostatistical analysis. Two types of design situation are considered. These are retrospective design, which concerns the addition of sampling locations to, or deletion of locations from, an existing design, and prospective design, which consists of choosing positions for a new set of sampling locations. We propose a Bayesian design criterion which focuses on the goal of efficient spatial prediction whilst allowing for the fact that model parameter values are unknown. The results show that in this situation a wide range of inter-point distances should be included in the design, and the widely used regular design is often not the best choice.  相似文献

Ranked set sampling is a sampling technique that provides substantial cost efficiency in experiments where a quick, inexpensive ranking procedure is available to rank the units prior to formal, expensive and precise measurements. Although the theoretical properties and relative efficiencies of this approach with respect to simple random sampling have been extensively studied in the literature for the infinite population setting, the use of ranked set sampling methods has not yet been explored widely for finite populations. The purpose of this study is to use sheep population data from the Research Farm at Ataturk University, Erzurum, Turkey, to demonstrate the practical benefits of ranked set sampling procedures relative to the more commonly used simple random sampling estimation of the population mean and variance in a finite population. It is shown that the ranked set sample mean remains unbiased for the population mean as is the case for the infinite population, but the variance estimators are unbiased only with use of the finite population correction factor. Both mean and variance estimators provide substantial improvement over their simple random sample counterparts.  相似文献

In this paper we consider a family of sampling designs for which increasing first‐order inclusion probabilities imply, in a specific sense, increasing conditional inclusion probabilities. It is proved that the complementary Midzuno, the conditional Poisson, and the Sampford designs belong to this family. It is shown that designs of the family are more efficient than a comparable with‐replacement design. Furthermore, the efficiency gain is explicitly given for these designs.  相似文献

In statistical practice, systematic sampling (SYS) is used in many modifications due to its simple handling. In addition, SYS may provide efficiency gains if it is well adjusted to the structure of the population under study. However, if SYS is based on an inappropriate picture of the population a high decrease of efficiency, i.e. a high increase in variance may result by changing from simple random sampling to SYS. In the context of two-stage designs SYS so far seems often in use for subsampling within the primary units. As an alternative to this practice, we propose to randomize the order of the primary units, then to select systematically a number of primary units and, thereafter, to draw secondary units by simple random sampling without replacement within the primary units selected. This procedure is more efficient than simple random sampling with replacement from the whole population of all secondary units, i.e. the variance of an adequate estimator for a total is never increased by changing from simple random sampling to randomized SYS whatever be the values associated by a characteristic with the secondary units, while there are values for which the variance decreases for the change mentioned. This result should hold generally, even if our proof, so far, is not complete for general sample sizes.  相似文献

We restrict attention to a class of Bernoulli subset selection procedures which take observations one-at-a-time and can be compared directly to the Gupta-Sobel single-stage procedure. For the criterion of minimizing the expected total number of observations required to terminate experimentation, we show that optimal sampling rules within this class are not of practical interest. We thus turn to procedures which, although not optimal, exhibit desirable behavior with regard to this criterion. A procedure which employs a modification of the so-called least-failures sampling rule is proposed, and is shown to possess many desirable properties among a restricted class of Bernoulli subset selection procedures. Within this class, it is optimal for minimizing the number of observations taken from populations excluded from consideration following a subset selection experiment, and asymptotically optimal for minimizing the expected total number of observations required. In addition, it can result in substantial savings in the expected total num¬ber of observations required as compared to a single-stage procedure, thus it may be de¬sirable to a practitioner if sampling is costly or the sample size is limited.  相似文献

In this paper we explore the possibility to use a particular class of models, known as probabilistic expert systems, to define two classes of estimators of a contingency table in case of stratified sampling designs. The two classes are characterized by the different role of the sampling design: in the first, the sampling design is treated as an additional variable; in the second, it is used only for estimation purposes by means of the survey weights. The bias/variance trade off of these estimators is analyzed and the consequences of model misspecification are illustrated. Furthermore, it is shown that the Horvitz–Thompson estimator belongs to both classes of estimators. It comes out that the Horvitz–Thompson estimator is almost always inefficient but robust. Monte Carlo simulations illustrate the efficiency of the proposed estimators.  相似文献

We briefly review and discuss design issues for population growth and decline models. We then use a flexible growth and decline model as an illustrative example and apply optimal design theory to find optimal sampling times for estimating model parameters, specific parameters and interesting functions of the model parameters for the model with two real applications. Robustness properties of the optimal designs are investigated when nominal values or the model is mis-specified, and also under a different optimality criterion. To facilitate use of optimal design ideas in practice, we also introduce a website for generating a variety of optimal designs for popular models from different disciplines.  相似文献

Rahim and Banerjee considered a constant integral of the hazard function for all sampling intervals. This led the sampling intervals to depend on the extended first sampling interval (h1). Since this limitation might not lead to an optimal situation, we first showed that elimination of the mentioned restriction did not cause any significant change in the average quality cycle cost. So if one is looking for an ideal cost and the simplicity of the process, the approach taken in Rahim and Banerjee’s study is the best procedure to adopt. Moreover, in many cases of non-uniform sampling method the first sampling interval becomes so large and this can sometimes lead the production system to the out-of-control state due to unexpected failures that might happen during that time. Therefore, we proposed a new model of uniform and non-uniform sampling intervals combination that allows us to confine the value of h1 without undergoing high costs. The proposed model showed that the quality cycle cost of the proposed model is lower than Rahim and Banerjee’s model in the economic-statistical state. For more illustration, we conducted sensitivity analysis and gave numerical examples.  相似文献

The sampling designs dependent on sample moments of auxiliary variables are well known. Lahiri (Bull Int Stat Inst 33:133–140, 1951) considered a sampling design proportionate to a sample mean of an auxiliary variable. Sing and Srivastava (Biometrika 67(1):205–209, 1980) proposed the sampling design proportionate to a sample variance while Wywiał (J Indian Stat Assoc 37:73–87, 1999) a sampling design proportionate to a sample generalized variance of auxiliary variables. Some other sampling designs dependent on moments of an auxiliary variable were considered e.g. in Wywiał (Some contributions to multivariate methods in, survey sampling. Katowice University of Economics, Katowice, 2003a); Stat Transit 4(5):779–798, 2000) where accuracy of some sampling strategies were compared, too.These sampling designs cannot be useful in the case when there are some censored observations of the auxiliary variable. Moreover, they can be much too sensitive to outliers observations. In these cases the sampling design proportionate to the order statistic of an auxiliary variable can be more useful. That is why such an unequal probability sampling design is proposed here. Its particular cases as well as its conditional version are considered, too. The sampling scheme implementing this sampling design is proposed. The inclusion probabilities of the first and second orders were evaluated. The well known Horvitz–Thompson estimator is taken into account. A ratio estimator dependent on an order statistic is constructed. It is similar to the well known ratio estimator based on the population and sample means. Moreover, it is an unbiased estimator of the population mean when the sample is drawn according to the proposed sampling design dependent on the appropriate order statistic.  相似文献

This paper proposes a quick switching sampling system for the inspection of attributes quality characteristics for resubmitted lots. The optimal parameters for both fraction non conforming items and fraction non conformities of the proposed sampling system are determined using an optimization procedure so that producer’s risk and consumer’s risk are simultaneously satisfied. Tables are also constructed for the selection of parameters for specified AQL and LQL. The advantage of the proposed plan over the existing plan is discussed and illustrate. An economic design of the proposed sampling system is also discussed and shown that the proposed sampling system has minimum total cost and average total inspection compared to other existing sampling plans.  相似文献
