During employment of icons in order to represent system functions, specific user requirements from elderly people have not been scientifically gathered and thus will merely be considered during the process of system design. The survey, with explicit consideration of technology acceptance and experience of 120 elderly probands, looked into the comprehension of four different classes of non-animated graphical representations. It was shown that among elderly, the use of photos compared to pictograms or clip art leads to a significantly higher recognition rate. The mapping of actions rather than objects leads to a further reduction of the error probability and is thus, especially in the context of telemedicine, preferable for the target group.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Abuse of the medication prescribed to the elderly living in long-stay care homes may be perpetrated by a minority of unscrupulous doctors, pharmacists, or home staff caring for the residents. Disorganised practices and homes, poor communications, and sloppy professional practices may create opportunities for over-dosing, errors, fraud, or theft. This article describes the circumstances leading to the potential abuse of elderly residents' medication, and the measures that may be taken to avoid or minimise such abuse from occurring.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper conducts a review of the extant literature to examine community collaboration in the provision of human services. The authors conducted a systematic research synthesis to organize literature around how community organizations should position themselves in order to maximize the benefits of collaborative relationships while enhancing service provision. Evaluation of the literature reveals 30% of the articles could be classified as empirical. Due to limitations of the studies no definitive statements could be made regarding the nature of collaboration and what works in the collaborative process; however, some generalizations are suggested. Gaps in the literature include lack of rigorous empirical studies that identify best practices, the type of training needed to prepare staff and members of organizations for participation in the collaborative process, and differing management models and practices to determine which forms of governance system achieve the best results.  相似文献

This article explores policy alternatives that can bring Social Security (OASDI) into long-term balance. The alternatives conform to long-standing principles that benefits are: an earned right, related to pay and time in the workforce, not based primarily on need; and related to annual changes in the cost of living. Furthermore, the OASDI is self-financed, employers and employees contribute equally, and participation is compulsory. In order to maintain public support, the policy alternatives also spread the "pain" of change between workers and beneficiaries, maintain income replacement rates for low-income earners, and retain a positive correlation between taxes and benefits. The article discusses varying four policy parameters to balance the funds: the primary insurance amount, the cost-of-living adjustment; the normal retirement age; and the payroll tax rate. Only by changing several policy parameters can all the objectives be satisfied. Discussed in detail are three scenarios, each of which includes a COLA cut and a pay-as-you-go FICA tax rate.  相似文献

Cross-cultural comparison can offer critical input to analyses of the interplay between formal and informal services for the elderly. Israel and Sweden have very different population structures and represent different points on the spectrum of welfare state development: Sweden has a much higher percentage of elderly, a less traditional family structure, and a much more developed system of public support. In addition, there are thought to be different attitudes toward family ties, with a less family-oriented value structure in Sweden. The natural question is to what extent these differences translate into differences in the extent and nature of family support for the elderly. In this article, family structure, living arrangements, disability rates, and formal and informal sources of help in Sweden and Israel are compared at various points in time. While there is a greater rate of formal service provision in Sweden and some substitution for family support seems to have occurred, informal care has nevertheless remalned important. In both countries, residential palterns are critical: it is when the elderly live alone that the formal system has tended to replace the family. The rate of institutionalization is particularly important in determining the rate of disabled elderly requiring care, both formal and informal, in the community.  相似文献

In recent decades, the prevalence of abuse against women, older persons, and persons with disabilities has become a major public health problem. Health professionals, urged by their professional associations to universally screen these groups, have employed various tools in an effort to identify individuals in need of help. Yet many of the tools used widely in clinical settings have limitations in terms of empirical soundness. This article presents tools used to screen women, older persons, and persons with disabilities as well as data on the reliability and validity of these instruments. These properties and the resources needed to reduce harm are important factors to consider before implementing screening. The article concludes with a summary of the risk-benefit issues related to the use of these tools and universal screening in general.  相似文献
