In this paper we investigate how age affects the self-reported level of life satisfaction among the elderly in Europe. By using a vignette approach, we find evidence that age influences life satisfaction through two counterbalancing channels. On the one hand, controlling for the effects of all other variables, the own perceived level of life satisfaction increases with age. On the other hand, given the same true level of life satisfaction, older respondents are more likely to rank themselves as “dissatisfied” with their life than younger individuals. Detrimental health conditions and physical limitations play a crucial role in explaining scale biases in the reporting style of older individuals. 相似文献

This paper analyses the determinants of an important component of well-being among individuals aged 50 years or older in eleven
European countries: satisfaction with social contacts. We use data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe
and anchoring vignettes to correct for potential differences in responses scales across countries and socio-demographic groups.
On average, older Europeans report being satisfied with their social contacts, but there exist substantial differences across
countries: respondents from Northern countries tend to be more satisfied than individuals from Central or Mediterranean countries.
Our analysis shows that correcting for response scale differentials alters the country ranking for of satisfaction with social
contacts, while it has much less effect on the estimates of what drives within country determinants. 相似文献

For most immigrants and ethnic minority groups, everyday life in the country of settlement raises question of adaptation and
belonging. Aside from factors such as lower income, lower education and poorer health, being an ethnic minority member carries
additional factors that can lower general life satisfaction. Using data from two studies the present paper shows that ethnic
minority group members (Turkish-Dutch) have lower general life satisfaction than a comparable majority group (Dutch) because
they are less satisfied with their life in the country of settlement. In addition, Study 2 showed that higher perceived structural
discrimination was associated with lower life satisfaction in the country of settlement, but also with higher ethnic group
identification that, in turn, made a positive contribution to general life satisfaction. 相似文献

This study aims to examine the association of assets with life satisfaction patterns among Korean older adults aged 50 and
above. This study used the first two panel data sets (2005 and 2007) from the Korean Retirement and Income Study, which collected
information from a nationally representative sample. Key independent variables include financial assets, real assets, and
debts. This study classifies overall patterns of life satisfaction using seven multi-dimensional items via Latent Class Analysis.
Multinomial regression models were used to determine factors related to estimated life satisfaction patterns after the data
were adjusted by weighting and multiple imputation. This study found three classes of life satisfaction at both waves: low,
moderate, and high. During the 2-year study period, significant portions of older adults moved upward (23%) and downward (22%)
in their life satisfaction patterns. Consistent with the asset effect theory, this study found that assets and debts are significantly
associated with life satisfaction patterns and longitudinal changes in these patterns. The study findings suggest that older
adults’ life satisfaction can be maintained or promoted through economic security. Financial planning programs combined with
asset accumulation may help older adults to achieve economic security and associated life satisfaction. 相似文献

The Chinese government has launched a series of health reforms to establish universal health insurance coverage, particularly for vulnerable groups, including middle-aged and older adults. However, the current public health insurance system is highly fragmented, consisting of different programs with different levels of premiums and benefits. We analyse whether the universal health insurance system increases the life satisfaction of middle-aged and older Chinese people and to what extent the type of health insurance affects the life satisfaction of this group. Our study is based on data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, a nationally representative longitudinal survey of Chinese aged 45 and above, in 2011, 2013, and 2015. We find that the life satisfaction of middle-aged and older adults does not depend on having any health insurance coverage but varies with the type of health insurance coverage, controlling for potential confounding variables such as health status, occupation, hukou status, and other demographic variables. Individuals covered by the most generous program, the Government Medical Insurance, reported a higher life satisfaction. In comparison, individuals covered by the Urban Employee Medical Insurance, the Urban Resident Medical Insurance, and the New Rural Cooperative Scheme reported a lower life satisfaction by 0.155, 0.106, and 0.112 standard deviations, respectively. Our results suggest that establishing a more equitable health insurance system should be the next step in health reforms in China. 相似文献

This study investigated the associations among the life satisfaction, metacognitive awareness and perceived self-efficacy. It also investigated whether life satisfaction, metacognitive awareness and perceived self-efficacy vary according to gender. The study was performed with 492 students attending high schools. The Life Satisfaction Scale, Cognitive Awareness Scale, Self-Efficacy Scale and an Individual Data Form were used for data collection. Pearson correlation coefficient results revealed that life satisfaction was significantly positively correlated with metacognitive awareness (r = .36, p < .001) and self-efficacy (r = .28, p < .001). Multiple regression analysis revealed that metacognitive awareness and self-efficacy accounted for 15 % of life satisfaction (F (2,489) = 45.25, p < .001). Metacognitive awareness (ß = .29, p < .001) and self-efficacy (ß = .16, p < .001) make a significant original contribution to the model. In addition, the results show that adolescents do not vary according to life satisfaction (F = .10, p = .74, η 2= .00), metacognitive awareness (F = .01, p = .91, η 2 = .00) or self-efficacy (F = 2.21, p = .13, η 2 = .00). The study results show that metacognitive awareness and self-efficacy are significant predictors of life satisfaction in adolescents. 相似文献

This research aims to investigate life satisfaction and happiness in Turkey. It extends the previous researches on subjective
well-being (SWB) for Turkey by considering both happiness and life satisfaction. The previous researches for Turkey are local
studies, and their findings cannot be generalized to the population of Turkish society. Given these facts, the factors that
shape individual happiness and life satisfaction amongst Turkish people are determined using a representative survey of sociocultural
and political change, World Values Survey (WVS). Some results obtained in this study are similar to typical findings such
as a negative age effect, positive influences of income and health status, and a negative effect of unemployment. Contrary
to the expectations, middle education has a negative direct effect on life satisfaction among females, and the upper education
level is insignificant in the life satisfaction model. By comparing the correlates of happiness and life satisfaction across
different years, this research aims to provide insights for policy makers and professionals to improve the perceived lives
of Turkish people.

SUMMARY This study examines the distribution of total, unimpaired, and impaired life for several groups of older women defined by race, education, and marital history. Using data from the 1984–1990 Longitudinal Study of Aging, we model transitions among functional statuses using discrete-time Markov chains, and use microsimulation to produce summary indices of active life. Remaining years of life and the proportion of remaining years with disability vary substantially, both within each group of women studied and between pairs of groups. Of all groups studied, never-married, more-educated white women live the longest, healthiest lives. Ever-married nonwhite women with low education have the shortest life expectancy, and experience the most disability. Our findings show that life expectancy is an incomplete indicator of the time women, in particular sub-groups, can expect to live with and without impairment. These findings highlight the heterogeneity of disability processes and life expectancy for older women. 相似文献

This study uses survey data from adolescents ( N = 1,428) in Hong Kong to test the association of gender with happiness and life satisfaction through relationship style and self-concept. While self-esteem and purpose in life are associated with higher happiness and life satisfaction, having more close friends is related to higher happiness, but not necessarily life satisfaction. On the other hand, boys with higher academic achievement are happier, but not more satisfied; the opposite holds true for girls. Our results provide a much-needed investigation of the differential effect of gender on the subjective well-being of adolescents. Contributing to the theoretical debate about the concepts of subjective well-being, we argue that happiness and life satisfaction are empirically and conceptually distinct. Life satisfaction might be characterized by more profound enjoyment and achievement in life than happiness. 相似文献

This study explores the relationship between the life satisfaction of older adults and the social support from grandchildren
in Hong Kong. Two hundred and fifteen older people (from the ages of 64 to 101, mean age 79.3), whose youngest grandchild
was aged 12 or older, were recruited from elderly service agencies to participate in the study. Face-to-face interviews were
conducted by trained interviewers using a standardized questionnaire, which included the Life Satisfaction Scale for Chinese,
the Lubben Social Network Scale, the Chinese Tradition Scale, grandchildren social support measures, self-rated health, self-rated
financial adequacy, and demographic variables. Hierarchical regression showed that the life satisfaction of older adults benefitted
significantly from the social support from grandchildren ( R
2 change = .05, F
change = 7.15, p < .001); while controlling demographic characteristics, general social support, attitude towards Chinese tradition, self-rated
health, and self-rated financial adequacy. The total explained variance was 51%. Emotional support and appraisal support from
grandchildren were identified as significant contributing factors. The policy and practice implications for active aging policies
are discussed in a Chinese context. 相似文献

In this paper we investigate the role of several socio-economic and non-economic factors such as absolute and relative income, education and religion to explain the differences of happiness levels of Turkish and Moroccan Immigrants in the Netherlands by using ordered logit model. We focus on members of the Moroccan and Turkish communities, as these are the two largest non-EU immigrant communities in the Netherlands. Our findings reveal that Moroccans, although they have lower income levels and higher unemployment rates than Turkish immigrants, their happiness level is higher than the Turkish immigrants. In order to understand this dilemma a questionnaire survey was performed to 111 Turkish and 96 Moroccan immigrants in Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Den Haag, Utrecht and Arnhem in 2010. The main purpose is to investigate how reference group’s self-reported life satisfaction is related to the level of absolute income; the level of relative income and other socio-economic factors. The main findings are that for Turkish sample relative income is significantly and negatively correlated with life satisfaction whereas, both absolute income (positively) and relative income (negatively) are significantly correlated with life satisfaction for Moroccan case. 相似文献

Recent research on well-being suggests that domain-specific behaviors contribute to domain-specific satisfactions, which in
turn contribute to an individual’s overall satisfaction with life. Our study is an attempt to add to the literature by observing
these phenomena from a financial perspective. Using data collected from a sample of undergraduate students at a major state
university in the U.S. and employing structural equation modeling, we have found evidence suggesting that positive financial
behaviors contribute to financial satisfaction and financial satisfaction in turn contributes to life satisfaction. In addition,
positive financial behaviors contribute to life satisfaction through two more mediating variables: academic performance and
academic satisfaction. 相似文献

Taiwan’s pension systems do not always ensure corresponding benefits for those who have achieved their career goals in labor markets, thus retirement decisions are often difficult for the majority of its citizens. Retirement is not only a social institution shaped by labor market and social welfare policy, but also a process affected by personal life chance and family situations, and therefore influences their citizen’s well-being. While scholars have maintained that retirees’ happiness is related to earlier life experiences, there is little empirical evidence that explains this relationship. This paper investigates the midlife work experiences and the resources workers acquired to determine the extent to which they affect the happiness of retirees. Data for examining study hypotheses are drawn from four waves of the Taiwan Longitudinal Survey on Aging. The results indicate that midlife work experiences exert significant influences on life satisfaction, and also play a moderate role on the relationship between seniors’ resources and their life satisfaction. Bridge employment is found to have varying effects on seniors’ life satisfaction depending on their occupation. We conclude that the happiness of older Taiwanese men is mainly a product of both their present situations and their recollections of their earlier occupational experiences. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Scholars have recently started to examine how minority stressors are associated with wellbeing outcomes among lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) people. Such studies have examined mainly hedonic wellbeing, and those that have investigated eudaimonic wellbeing have tended to use composite measures. The present study draws from this literature to examine how minority stressors are associated with a key indicator of eudaimonic wellbeing: life meaning. Drawing from the minority stress model, we examined these associations using structural equation modeling among 266 LGB adults. Expectations of rejection and identity concealment, but not discrimination or internalized homophobia, had significant negative associations with life meaning. Discrimination had negative indirect associations with life meaning via expectations of rejection and concealment. Our results highlight the nuanced relations that exist between minority stressors and life meaning and highlight the need to move beyond composite measures of wellbeing. Implications for clinical practice and directions for research are discussed. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to examine the moderating role of gender on relations among social support functions and life satisfaction in older Malaysians. The study sample was 1,800 older residents in a community; all were at least 60 years old. This study was a cross-sectional and corelational survey, and the data were collected by multistage stratified sampling. This study revealed that fewer social support functions, and therefore less life satisfaction, were available for females than for males. The results of moderated regression analyses demonstrated that gender interacted only on the relationship between positive social interaction support and tangible support with life satisfaction. Specifically, at a high tangible support level, females had lower life satisfaction when compared to a low tangible support level. There may be a need for new programs and services to provide other aspects of social support to older female adults to improve and maintain life satisfaction in later life. 相似文献

The primary goal of this study was to investigate the mediator effects of loneliness and subjective happiness on the relationship between core self-evaluations and life satisfaction in Chinese college students. A total of 301 participants were all students who were attending three different Chinese colleges in Nanchang, Xi’an and Yan’an. Data were collected by using the Core Self-evaluations Scale, UCLA Loneliness Scale, Subjective Happiness Scale and Satisfaction with Life Scale. Path revealed that subjective happiness fully mediated the relationship between core self-evaluations and life satisfaction. Furthermore, the association between core self-evaluations and life satisfaction was not mediated by loneliness and subjective happiness partially mediated the association between core self-evaluations and loneliness. The final model also showed a significant path from core self-evaluations through subjective happiness to life satisfaction and loneliness. Limitations of the study are considered and implications of the results for increasing individuals’ life satisfaction are discussed. 相似文献

Studies on intra-household allocation of resources show that exogenous increase in mothers’ income has larger effect on children’s outcomes than the same increase in fathers’ income, suggesting gender differences may exist in parents’ altruism towards their children. Using self-reported life happiness and life satisfaction, we investigate the differences by gender in mutual altruism between father and child as well as mother and child dyads in Singapore. We found that mutual altruism exists between mother and child, but not between father and child. These findings are robust to the measure of self-reported well-being. Further, we find that gender difference in altruism of fathers and mothers is not driven by the difference in the extent of future old age support desired by fathers and mothers from their children. 相似文献

Families form an integral part of society and in fostering individual well-being. Despite the acknowledged importance of family, the association between family functioning and individual well-being outcomes have remained unexplored in the current body of knowledge. This paper explores the association between family functioning and reported levels of life satisfaction and happiness in South Africa. The paper employs the Family Attachment and Changeability Index (FACI8) to measure family functioning, using data from the 2011 South African Social Attitudes Survey. Four measures of family functioning are utilised, namely the aggregate FACI8 scale, the attachment and changeability sub-scales, and family functioning type. Improvements in the level of family functioning as well as in the levels of attachment and changeability are positively associated with life satisfaction and happiness. In addition, individuals living in midrange or balanced family functioning types are more satisfied with life and happier compared to persons living in extremely or moderately dysfunctional families. The findings highlight the importance of supportive intra-family dynamics in fostering greater individual well-being. This in turn places emphasis on the investigation of likely correlates of family functioning and impact evaluations of family-focused social work interventions’ impact on family functioning as areas for future research. 相似文献

Despite policies aimed at decreasing old-age income inequality, such as Social Security and Supplemental Security Income, research consistently finds that later-life poverty is highly concentrated among women. While the early-life economic disadvantages of motherhood are well established, little work has examined whether these disadvantages persist into later life. Life course research consistently demonstrates the relationship between early-life choices and later-life inequality, but few studies have examined whether the reproductive phase of a woman's life is associated with her later-life income. Using data from the 2003 wave of the National Longitudinal Survey of Mature Women cohort, this research examines whether women's age at first birth and parity are associated with her later-life income within the context of marriage. From a set of multivariate analyses, I find that despite a marginal statistically significant effect, substantively for the women in this cohort the effects of childbearing are not particularly consequential for later-life income. The results suggest that as women age the economic penalties associated with motherhood are less important to financial well-being than are other factors. 相似文献
