THE SITUATION OF CHINESE WOMEN (Information office of the State Council of the People's Republic of China)

New China has enabled women to make conspicuous progress in all aspects of society. The Chinese government has exerted great efforts to promote women's education and to remove barriers to female education. In regular education, the state has adopted measures to increase the proportion of female enrollment. In some remote, poverty-stricken areas and ethnic minority areas, there are free courses and schools specially for women as a measure. In 1992, the attendance rate for girls from 7 to 11 years old had risen to 96.2 percent from less than 20 percent before the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949. The proportion of females in middle schools, colleges and postgraduate schools reached 43.1 percent, 33.7 percent and

On June 2. the Information Office of the State Council of the People's Republic of China issued a White Paper in Beijing about the situation of Chinese women.The 20, 000-word white Paper consists of a foreuord and eight parts. Through a large number of facts and data, it introduces in details hou' Chinese uomen obtained historical liberation during the new' democratic rerolution and socialist rerolution led by the Chinese Communist Party, and how under the socialist system Chinese women hare stepped onto the path of equality and derelopment and become an important force in China's construction, derelopment and progress.In Seplember 1995, the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women is to be held in Beijing. To satisfy our readers' desire to knou' about the situation of Chinese women, we will publish the excerpls of the White paper, "The Situalion, of Chinese Women," in this and the Norember issue of our, magazine.

母亲说,当护士刚把我们俩抱到她面前的时候,我第一个睁开了眼睛,顺手在他脸上轻轻挠了一把,还在襁褓里的他顿时疼得哇哇大哭.从那时开始,我们之间的争斗就没有停止过. 他比我早出生8分钟,我得叫他哥哥.不过,他天生体质就弱,发育得慢,和我在一起时总是受我欺负.小时候,我没少从他手里抢糖果吃.大家都说他的性格像爸爸,我像妈妈. 家里自从有了我们俩,就再没有一刻安宁的时候.从学会说话开始,我们不是在一起吵嘴,就是撸起袖子打架.
