The LINC Project

Abstract

The Linking Intergenerational Networks in Communities (LINC) Project, a statewide, collaborative, intergenerational program, funded in 1995 by the V. Kann Rasmussen Foundation, included Clemson University, the Bureau of Senior Services for South Carolina, the South Carolina Department of Education, and the United Way of South Carolina. In this paper, the author focuses on what the partnering groups learned during the five-year project about the process of creating and implementing a collaborative statewide intergenerational program that included a public university, the state offices of aging and education, and a private fundraising and public service agency. The author, who during part of the project was the evaluator at Generations Together at the University of Pittsburgh and who consulted with the LINC project on the project evaluation from 1998 to 2000, uses the literature on collaboration to describe how the four partners worked together to form an intergenerational collaborative organization in South Carolina.     

The Couch Project

Carl Couch had a distinctive project. He was a man of distinctive character. In this commentary, I first describe the Couch project and then discuss how the project was interwoven with the character of its author. I then discuss “Oh, What Webs Those Phantoms Spin” in the context of Carl's larger project and close with a brief discussion of New Iowa School research after Carl Couch.     

The Voices Project

The purpose of the Voices Project was to give children and adolescents a greater voice in the local and global dialogues about the precursors and solutions to all forms of school violence. This exploratory project incorporates input from youngsters, educators, community partners, and university researchers into the development of a model for non-violent schools and communities. In this article, the Voices Project is described and implications for practice forwarded.     

The STAFF Project

Abstract

The Support and Training for Adoptive Families (STAFF) project was developed as a response to concerns about large numbers of infants with prenatal substance exposure being placed in foster care or for adoption with families who were not prepared for their special needs. This article describes the ongoing STAFF project and how it was designed to meet the identified needs of infants with prenatal substance exposure, their families, and their workers.     

The Pigeon Parlance Project

The Community Practice Pilot Project

ABSTRACT

The Community Practice Pilot Project tested an approach for preparing students for work in organizations in which no social workers were employed. Field placements were clustered in a small geographic area. Classroom learning was linked with field instruction, advising, and Experiential Learning. Goals included integrating content on community-based practice into the foundation curriculum, exposing students to community building initiatives, and influencing the master's curriculum. The Project provided some evidence that early exposure to community initiatives has a positive influence on increasing student enrollment in macro concentrations and courses. Implications for social work include viewing the “environment-surrounding-the-person” as a starting point for instruction in foundation methods courses.     

The Northeast-Northwest Collaborative Adoption Project

SUMMARY

One of the exciting new directions in family research is the examination of shared and nonshared environmental processes underlying the learning of cognitive, literacy, and social-behavioral skills. The adoption design is a powerful method for testing theories regarding environmental mechanisms. In this paper, we describe the Northeast-Northwest Collaborative Adoption Project (N2CAP), an ongoing adoption study in which we are examining the role of parenting environments generally, and parent-child relationships more specifically, in the development of cognitive, reading and social-emotional outcomes in childhood. The goal of this study is to identify environmental influences that impact children's cognitive and social-emotional development using a genetically sensitive design, and to further the development of models of genotype-environment processes.     

The Learning From Ethnographic Film Project

Travel, indeed, struck him as being a waste of time, since he believed that the imagination could provide a more-than-adequate substitute for the vulgar reality of actual experience (Huysmans 1959[1888]).     

The Growing Up in Cities Project

SUMMARY

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child contains a set of “participation clauses” which are leading members of development agencies, municipal offices, and community organizations to incorporate children and youth into community planning. The Growing Up in Cities project of UNESCO provides a model for doing this, with a focus on low-income areas of special concern for urban policy-makers. The authors describe a case study of this project in Bangalore, India, explore the complexities of implementation of youth participation, and discuss the lessons learned.     

The Norway Couple Project: Lessons Learned

Couple therapists in routine practice may find it difficult to apply findings from an increasingly expanding and complex body of couple therapy research. Meanwhile, concerns have been raised that competency in evidence‐based treatments is insufficient to inform many practice decisions or ensure positive treatment outcomes (American Psychological Association Presidential Task Force on Evidence‐Based Practice, American Psychologist, 2006, 271). This article aims to narrow the research/practice gap in couple therapy. Results from a large, randomized naturalistic couple trial (Anker, Duncan, & Sparks, Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 2009, 693) and four companion studies are translated into specific guidelines for routine, eclectic practice. Client feedback, the therapeutic alliance, couple goals assessment, and therapist experience in couple therapy provide a research‐informed template for improving couple therapy outcomes.

The Middle Years of the Decade Publication Project

This article reports the results of a qualitative study of the professional identities, roles, and relationships of a variety of geriatric case managers located in nine demonstration sites around the United States. Beginning with an overview of social work and nursing roles in health care settings, the authors provide background on the study and its methods, followed by results that highlight the voices of persons interviewed. They conclude with implications for social work education in five areas: articulating social work's great tradition, developing career opportunities, building alliances with students and educators in other professional schools, engaging in ongoing faculty development, and infusing the social work curriculum with geriatric content.
